Rifle for Service Rifle

So what is the common method for carrying mags? Chest rig? Some kind of belt setup?

It really comes down to personal preference. longshot wore a vest last year that carried 4 mags plus one on the weapon, I wore a 3 mag shingle on my belt weekside, plus one on the rifle. saw everything from vests and chest rigs to minimalist mag pouches attached to belts.

It boils down to practice, practice, practice. Last year my practice lacked and it showed in my shooting.

Welcome to the addiction of SR.......

You can run the DCRA matches with 2 mags (three is my recommended minimum). The ORA/CAFSAC course of fire is best run with 10 mags (I did run 2 mags back in 2010 because I was told it couldn't be done) fewer creates stress.

For NSCC I run 3 5 round mags. ORA, 5-6 LARs with base extensions and 1 Pmag (for the sighers).

Mag carry method is personal as others have said. I run a vest that will hold all 6 because that is what I started with and I see no reason to change. I consolidate my mags as I go through the course of fire so that I am typically grabbing mags from the same place 10-11 o'clock. Empties go in a dump pouch on my 7 o'clock. Not much blows worse than reloading with an empty mag. Leads to those click instead of bang situations.

For the NSCC shooting with 3 mags, any recommendations on what sort of pouches would be good? I was looking at some of the single mag pouches that CP Gear sells. Also saw a few interesting pouches on OST's website. Are there any styles that are easier/faster to use than others?

The only times you reload rapidly from pouches at NSCC during Matches 1-16 are during the rundowns. Most any pouch that won't lose the magazine while running will work; even pockets have been used. You will be changing your elevation and windage as well as reloading so easy access is a good idea, don't waste time fumbling.
FIBUA Match is a bit different, but a couple of double magazine pouches on a vest or belt will work. Extra ammunition carried on chargers allows for rapid reloads. Because stages are shot by relays, the launch does not happen until the line is ready. Study the CoF posted on the DCRA website so that you can determine your needs.

Ok sounds good, perhaps I'll just get a couple simple pouches to keep on my belt and see how that goes. As I learn and train more I'm sure I"ll figure out what will work for me.

hello everyone! I am also in the same boat as southpaw and also looking for a rifle and pistol for service matches. im looking at a sig p226 mk25 and a PWS AR with 18inch barrel or under. Any advice on long stroke piston systems? What about use of the LAR 10 round pistol mags or the new ATRS 10/20 pistol mags (for the AR platform?) in these matches?

I don't see any issue with your choic e of firearms. I prefer lar 10 with gds design plastic block to get the correct 30 rounder height and shape for monopoding.

There is no mandatory mag change in Ontario where the ORA shoots the CAFSAC Cof. Mag change is only mandatory if you shoot at the NSCC or BCRA's matcches in BC( I assume they follow the NSCC Cof)

If you are in BC, follow the NSCC rules. If you are in Ontario, follow the Ontario rules.

If you are planning to shoot in Ontario, don't make life miserable by carrying 11X 5 round mags. If you bring only 2 or 3X 5 round mags, no one will wait for you to bomb up. The Match will move on. Bring 6X ( or 5 min ) 10 rounders and you will be good to go.

If you are planning to shoot in BC or the NSCC, you really only need 3X5 rounders.

Would a scope like a Bushnell 3.5-21 be too much scope for the NSCC type shooting? I doubt I would need to run it at full magnification much, if at all, but may also use it on my precision rifle. Or would like a $200 3-9x scope be just as suited to this purpose?

Way more magnification than needed, but certainly usable.
Are the adjustments dependable?
Would your $200 3-9 have predictable, repeatable, easy to use adjustments?
You need a quality optic that isn't going to let you down.

Rekindling this thread. I just today purchased a DD 18" S2W just like the OP. Good balance, I thought, between length, features, cost, etc. Compared to a DIY build & the Stag 3G. Decided to go with the DD because a) I found one at the old, before-the-dollar-appreciated cost and b) DD discontinued it in favour of the Pro so you can't get 'em any more and c) if I wanted to use the rifle for service conditions I'd have to get rid of the Geissele trigger anyway.

Unfortunately, looks like all the SR events in BC are in the next couple of weeks so I won't be able to make it to any! :(

Guess there's still CQB. ;)

Thank you. That's one less variable to contend with -- pun not intended. Between a more-than-fulltime job, family, busy summer schedule, the works it's really hard to find time for personal hobbies.

I'm frankly excited to get started, whatever form it takes!
