I'm thinking of buying the wife a target rifle just to get her into the sport. She tells me that she would love to go to the range with me and has shot trap with me a few times. She is of smaller stature and is left handed. She can handle trap loads from my 870 express but does complain that her shoulder gets a little sore. I also see her reaching to hold the gun up so I think that it may be a little long for her. She will not deer hunt but would probably take out a ground hog so I don't see a need for a .243.

What I am thinking

Left handed

bolt action

223 or 22-250

youth mode (if there is anything like that out there)

similar price to the stevens packages

oh and don't laugh at me but I want to see if I can get it custom painted to PINK CAMO (Just stalk and forearm).

Point me in the right direction poeple!

.243 is very accurate and a very flat shooter almost no felt recoil much like a regular .22. A heavier bullet will help with longer range shots ( windage issues).
.223 is very cheap to shoot and can be very accurate.

it pretty much will come down to what she wants the rifle for. If all she will ever be concerned with is putting holes in paper.. then go .223. I have 2 of them, and they are the cheapest of all my rifles to shoot.. lots of fun.

but a pop bottle of water at 200 yards being hit by a 85grHP from a .243 is way more fun!
but seriously, have her try different guns for size... Ruger makes a very short .243 and it may be better suited for her stature than some of the other rifles out there. Im not trying to promote a Ruger, Im just saying she needs to try things out for "fit and comfort"... caliber selection may have to be secondary. And besides, you are wanting to stay within the .20Cal relm anyway right?

I would suggest a 204, very low recoil, can see what you hit, easy to load for and a good variety of makes and models to choose from.

Either get a youth model, or anything with a wood stock. Then you can just cut the stock down and put a new recoil pad on it. You can cut a synthetic stock down but it is a bit more trouble.

Basically get the rifle that she likes the best, and go from there.

try the browning micro hunter line. They are available left handed and are proportioned for the smaller shooter.

I wouldnt reccomend the 243 for the intended use, 223 is what you want.

If you can wait a bit, wait for the CZ 527 American left hand in 223. Dont paint the stock pink however  Its detach mag, beautiful, excellent trigger, and accurate.

Since shes not big game hunting I'd say start her off with .22lr. It's cheap, easy to shoot, accurate, and kills small game just fine. Step it up and try out the 22mag or the 17hmr.
