i am thinking on monday to buy a Mossber 308. atr night train just to do some shooting at a local range . the reason why buying it is because the way it looks love how the scope looks and the bi pod its very tactical .. i am spending around $700 on it . what do u guys think . ( i did see a thing where a bolt did come out and hit a guy in the face , so i am a little nervous about that now ) please reply if u have experince with this gun ( and heard of live bullet getting stuck )

or if u guys have any other suggestions for guns under $700 that would be appreacited .. ;)

I have no reason to believe that Mossberg would open themselves up to the liability costs associated with intentionally producing an unsafe product. Having said that, the Mossberg bolt gun isn't my idea of a good hunting rifle and in my opinion you could do better with the same money.

While much of this is personal preference, I would begin with a look at the Tradex site. Primarily they carry older Husqvarna rifles, but a good .308, .30/06, or 6.5X55 could be had for around $500, and there are lots to choose from. These rifles feature controlled round feed actions and hinged floor plate magazines. If the stock of the rifle you choose has a small crack at the tang, which is common, this can easily be fixed by a gunsmith who could then bed and cross bolt the stock, cut the stock to properly fit you, install a good quality recoil pad, resulting in a good quality semi-custom rifle for the same money you would spend on a new bargain basement rifle off the shelf. Your Tradex rifle could be used as is with the factory sights, the irons could be upgraded to a receiver sight and higher front sight to fit into the front sight ramp, and/or it could be scoped.

$700 will buy you a very nice new rifle. (Ruger Hawkeye, Winchester Model 70, Remington 700) Any of them will last a lifetime and you will own a quailty rifle you will be proud of. No you won't get a scope or that tactical look, but one day you will grow out of that and appreciate classic lines and quality build. My suggestion to you, buy one of these new or a used one off the EE. Invest $250-300 on a quality scope and you will be set for life.

For that kind of money there's better rifles to be had.

If you want an econo rifle that's good without breaking the bank get a Stevens 200.

If you want one already scoped then get one of the Savage package deals.

Just my .02

NAA.

Add $300 more and you can get a really Styr- Mannlicher in many diffrent calibers. But I also agree that If you are lookung at a Bargan basement rifle, there are better to be had in a used quality rifle. I think that even a good shape bolt milsurp would be better than a bargan mossberg. Just my .02 cents.

I know Ted (Why Not?) has a Mossberg and so far he's still walking around alive. That said, with all the good press they've received, I'd have a hard time recommending anything other than a Stevens 200 as an entry-leve rifle. You could step up and get into a Remington SPS (I'm not convinced they're any better than the Stevens except possibly in their stock) or a Savage with a synthetic stock and a blued/parkerized barrel. I would avoid the combos myself because I prefer better quality optics. I know people that have had years of great service from the Simmons scopes that Savage includes with their packages btu they're just not as good as I like. YMMV.

The basic ATR may be good value as a low budget hunting rifle, (though probably not something that scares the marketing dept at Stevens) but I don't think the black treatment and accessories justify the $700 price tag for a Night Train.

keep them coming lol thank u guys ... i really like the tatical i will price out the reminigtion 700 on monday or tuseday , the scope that comes with it is a barska wich i hear isnt that good lol ... i dont know if i am going to hunt or not its more for shooting targers n whatnot

Do yourself a favour, and trust us all, in firearms, and optics you get what you pay for, save up a bit, and you can find yourself in a new 700, TC Venture, or T-3, 116FC or M-70 and M77s mid range firearms. These are decent rifles that was mentioned will last you a lifetime. Plus as mentoned you can find complete pacages in the EE set up ready to go, for 7-800..with quality optics, elites, and burris scopes are great value..

For example I bought a Sako Finnbear a few years back for the money your looking at spending, right here in the EE

Good luck

him how about the remingtion
Mod 770 .308 cal

...

It's the hapless 710 re-named. There are still several better options for the same price or less: Savage, Stevens, Marlin, Mossberg. And if you must have a Remington on a budget, look at the SPS variants of the 700 rather than the 710/770.

I'd get a Stevens 200 and a Burris scope. Total will be a little over $500 but it will an accurate rifle you can shoot paper with and take hunting. If you like the tacticool lok, just paint the stock black (or camo).
