Can anyone make out what the rifle is that this gentleman is packing?
The caption with the picture says its a single shot and the picture was taken in 1871
Springfield trapdoor perhaps?

Could be trap door could be snider all depends on where the pic was taken really.

Comb and buttplate tang don't look right for a Snider. Those features might be a key to figuring it out.
I have seen better looking mounts

In 1871 it would have to be an "Allen conversion" from musket to trap door would it not?

Possibly the trapdoor had 4 variations between the end of the civil war and 1871 1865(.58 rimfire) 1866(.50 caliber conversion) 1868 .50 caliber with a new barrel and 1870 the last of the .50’s.

I find the rifle scabbard interesting as well

Wow, that really looks like a snider..but the butt stock looks different/altered..

It looks like a sporterized Model 1866 or 1868 "Trapdoor" Springfield.

Sporterized variations of these rifles were very popular during the westward expansion of the late 1860s and 1870s.

My guess is the scabbard is for a Walker. They used to also use it for their Springfields.

Horse is described as an Indian Cayuse

Would be very interesting to find out where/who that brand is registered too.
