Hi,
I want a rifle in 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and given that I am left-handed and I want controlled round feed I am left with no commercial ready made rifles. I cannot afford a custom action so my remainig option is to use a left-handed action and have it re-barreled. I have seen a Ruger M77 Mk II action which would do the job but, apart from the trigger and the barrel what other modifications would you suggest? I would retain the stock which is laminate
Also I would like to fit an ER Shaw barrel but have heard they will not ship to Canada does anyone know if this is the case?
Finally I know of no makers who use the Ruger action. I assume there is a reason for this but if there is another similar action out there in a left-hand version then by all means suggest it.
I am on a budget with this rifle which will be used for deer and probably coyotes.
All help gratefully received
Tack

I would think that most custom gunsmiths would use a Ruger action if you have one. Contact Barry @ Bits of Pieces...

FWIW, might not be what you want to hear, but I would get a Ruger Hawkeye LH in .25-06 or .270 and take the extra $1000 and upgrade the stock or buy some real nice glass for it. Both will kill deer and yotes easily. The difference in a 6.5 and a .270 is not noticeable.

On some rifles, the bolt head will will to be opened a bit to fit the slightly bigger bolt head of the 6.5.
Heym barrels are also a very good choice for such a project.

Get a left hand model 70 and rebarrel

Yeah, that's what I'd do too. The Ruger M77MII would be just as good though.

Another LH CRF M70ish option is the Montana M99 action, if a guy can afford one.

blargon's advice ain't bad though, RE: caliber choice. They all shoot and kill game just fine. Now if you just 'have' to have a Swede, that's all the reason a guy needs.:)

Buy a LH Ruger M77 in 25-06 and a RH in 6.5 Swede...have a gunsmith swap the barrels and then sell the 25-06.

I suggest a 25-06 only because they are usually easier to sell than a 270 or a 30-06....

or, get a custom barrel installed....

Hi,
Its interesting to note that while European manufactured 6.5x55 ammunition has a case head size of .479 inch, North American ammunition has a case head of .473-.475 inch. Therefore a standard length .30-06 sized bolt should be suitable.
Thanks for the response so far

interesting idea i have the sweeish AG-42B semi auto in 6.5 and its a great cartridge accurate, low recoil, low cost of ammo flat shooting jsut to name off a few....:)

LH M70 6.5x55

Here's a dandy. WAY nicer than the T3s IMO. LH M70 6.5x55

The seller is a good guy and the smith is top shelf. If I had the cash it'd be sold already......

Rembo's idea was a good one too.......
