Rifle Is 99.9 % Rust !!!!

Howdy,

I am looking at a fellows 03 springfield.....the rifle is NRA POOR with heavy heavy surface rust and mild pitting....the rifle is mech. sound and all there it is just that they are hard to find (this cheap) what can a guy do...hot tank
etc etc etc....I know it WILL require a GUNSMITH but what would you guys do to it.......and cost ?????????????
 
Pits are pits and you can not remove all of them without removing a lot of metal everywhere.

I would suggest wetting it down with Hoppes #9 and wrapping it with Saran Wrap so it stays wet..... for a few days..... then totally taking it apart and doing more of the same and using a soft wire wheel remove what rust you can.... then more soaking with Hoppes and more wire brushing..... then have it sandblasted, wire brushed and blued and then re-assemble it.

That should kill all the rust and the matte finish will not look too bad.

We have our product called Arma-fill that will fill surface imperfections such as pits, this might help you out on your restoration.We can also do it for you but if it is extremely bad the cost will go up as it will take lots of time.Look for Senderos pics on here of a browning Blr he refinished with Arma-Coat products, it had before and after pics.Need any more info please contact us.

How much is it? I have often worked on basket cases, and quite often the results are far better than you would assume. If nothing else, there can be a lot learned from a project like this. Work gently, carefully, don't use harsh methods, take your time, you may be surprised.
 
It was 250 shipped.......It is in the exchange on 'hunting rifles' thinking I will get rid of the stock, and replace the trigger/magazine floor plate....some stuff on ebay
 
I came across a new product for rust remover a few weeks ago .
got it at an Autosense parts store , called EXR .
It doesn't smell or burn the skin , seems fairly docile , but don't drink it .
The parts have to soak for a couple of days and then rince with water .
The rust is gone , for real , suprised the heck out of me .
I put in a bunch of nuts and bolts with various platings , some plain and a few painted . it affected some finishes and didn't harm others . Never tried blueing yet .
easiest most non intrusive way to eliminate rust I have found yet , and I have tried a few .

So, $250 for the gun, it has a cracked stock which will run about $100 minimum to replace, pitted bore---live with it or replace for a few hundred more $$$, plus it still looks like a rusted pile of crap.....another couple hundred to refinish it........:eek:
Hold out for a decent one that doesn't need any work.;)
