Rifle Myths and Mysteries

When I was a kid in the early 1960s I heard my dad's friends talking abut the 280 Ross as if it were the hammer of Thor, shooting and killing at impossible ranges.

I guess there was a hint of truth in it, being a 7mm bullet with a hefty dose of powder behind it, but it wasn't a miracle worker either.

Likely few of your dad's friends had a fast 7mm at that time. While there were a few, mostly wildcats, the 280 was a hot number until the 7 Rem Mag showed up and became a common cartridge. - dan

I'm actually disappointed with this thread and wish I hadn't started it.

I was hoping for stuff like I was posting re: "myths, lies and fallacies" about the 1911 as published by Patrick Sweeney, backed up by data from "Hatcher's Notebook".

Instead what we are getting are regurgitated statements made by stupid people which border on the ridiculous, things we all heard as kids and recognized as such.

Oh well, back to constructive things now that the snow and ice are fast disappearing ......

A thread is no longer yours the moment you start it ;)
