rifle problems help

okay just got back from a trip to the range. I start off with my .350 rem mag. I take 2 shots, 100 yards, both to the left and low, i adjust acourdingly. Next shot perfect, next shot center 1 more inch high, next shot, center 1 more inch higher.

I put that gun down, take a break and cool off. I then pick up my .300 win mag. first shot good, second brass jams in the gun and I can not open the action, $%#?@&&#?$%@&#&$?@?#?#?$%@&?. I had this happen before and I thought it was the factory ammo I was using so I switched..... WHAT the heck is going on, i can not find any burs on the brass...


Back to the .350, I figure maybe its me and i am flinching. I am not a great shot but ican usually do better than that. So i shoot a group at 50 yards, 1 shot 1inch high, second 1 inch higher, 3rd 1/2 higher....

I tighted the rings and stock but I did not check the mounts that is next. The scope is a leupold vx III 1.5 - 6 x 32... so it is not cheap. any help would be great.

PS the old beat up.30-30 and the girl friends gun shot great.
 
Unless you are solidly anchored in a sturdy bench with an ergonmoically set up rest, using a 1.5 x 6 scope even on 6 power, I wouldn't be expecting clover leafs - even at 50 yards.

In my observations, with big game hunting rifles, most people can't do it.

Check the mounts and eliminate that possibility. When in doubt, prove that you can group at 25, build your confidence and work your way back.

the .350 has been glass bedded, custom trigger all done by a gn smith who used to shoot on the candian team... so i was told..

I just pulled it apart and everything is tight...

I am not expecting clover leafs... i have hunting guns that can do them at 100 yrds with the right loads.... but I am confused as to why the %#$@ it keeps going an inch higher every shot....from the first shot to the 6th shot it went up 5 inches.. straight left to right...
 
that is what i am thinking, any one know how good leupolds warranty is

Do you have another scope to put on temporarily? If so, see if your shooting does the same thing with the other scope. Then you will know for sure if it is the leupold scope.

Don't worry if it is the leupold, they will fix it no charge.
 
I'd pull the stock off and have a peek under there and see how it looks. It seems like the bedding is the issue, as the barrel heats up, the shots go up. If it was the scope, why would it return to dead center after the rifle cools? It would stay off zero. Has this gun/scope ever shot consistent groups for you?
 
yah, last year it shot great, I shot a doe in the head 100 yards... right between the eyes. I could 1- 1/2 inch groups all the time....

It all started after a guad ride... that was the last time I had the rifle out.

Is it possible that there is some kind of foreign material between the stock and barrel, as a result of the quad ride?
 
First thing I would look at would be the forend bbl contact. Is the bbl free floated or is it touching at the tip of the stock? If it is touching at the tip lift up on the bbl and see how hard it is touching the tip of the stock and "feel" if it returns to the same place when you let the bbl rest back down on the forend.
 
barrel has been bedded and free floated.... I pulled the gun apart and checked everything. there seems to be no issues between the stock and the barrel.
 
Put on another scope and see if it still shifts its zero. Its the only way you can tell if there is a problem with the Leupold, especially if it happened after a quad ride, sounds like something got banged up in the scope.

Did you check for copper buildup in the barrel?? I had a problem with my 30-06 a good cleaning with copper cutter solved that.

Sometimes it simply is an issue we don't believe could happen to us. Soooo take the gun out again with a friend who can shoot and have him try it, and then you. Before jumping into a lot of fix'ims try it again, we all have bad days. take care and enjoy Bill.

Very true, I was out with a buddy once with a gun he borrowed for the deer season, and we were shooting free-hand @ 75 yds and he fired 12 shots and didn't hit a 3' x3' sheet of plywood. He said the gun was ####, and I said "let me try", I fired one shot into the bullseye, and laughed.:D
 
Do you reload ?

I was having problems with a ruger similar to yours. I have refined my reloading proceedures and things seem to have improved enormously. The key was preparing the brass.

Use only one type. Don't mix brands or lots
Trim them all to the exact same length
weigh each powder load individually


Also, had an uncle with your problem in a .308 norma. it turned out to be a hairline crack behind the rear mounting screw. After the repair problem solved.

If everything fails grasp the rifle firmly by the barrel and wrap it around the nearest fence post. I've been close a few times. On the positive side it gives you a reason to buy a new gun.
