Senior,
I'd recomend firing it with a real long string. However.......

6 pound, 500 bullet,49 grains of powder, 2000 fps.....75.55 foot pounds of recoil.

6 1/2 pound rifle, all else the same....... 69.74 foot pounds of recoil.

Have you chronographed these loads?

That hurts just thinking about it. :D

I wanna try a magazine full! :dancingbanana:

Well actually all those 500gn loads averaged 1950fps out of my chrono which does read 50-75 fps slower than my neighbours new one! & I couldn't find my reloading records for the 45-70 quickly so guessed at the IMR4198 loads!
I do know when I used to let guys shoot it I always stood real close so & could catch the gun if neccessary :p & have on occasion needed to!!
I'll tell you something else..that stupid lever on the #3 has caused my finger to swelll on every occasion I fired it!

Hornhead: I'm surprised those 45-70 factorys are that fast but haven't fired a factory load in a long time! & yes I'm gettin older too, my present 45-70 is now a Siamese Mauser with a 25" x 1' octagon barrel that probably weighs 12-14lbs with scope & it's still not heavy enough for full bore loads! I do tend to back of a little more these days:D
