Any suggestions on a good scope for .270 Kimber 8400 classic. Any special instruction for installation?Hunting on the prairies and bush. Not very familiar with deer rifles, and this is my first year deer hunting. I hunt mostly Upland game birds with shotgun.

For mixed hunting, you won't beat the Leupold VXII in 2x7 or VXIII in 2.5x8.

For close hunting, you don't want much more that 3x on the low end of your scope's variableness. (I no ... "variableness" iz not a reel werd) :p

I would suggest the 3-9x40 4200 Elite for your needs..

I think he means 3200 since the 4200 line does'nt come in 3-9x

But the 4200 2.5-10x40 would be pretty hard to beat, as would the VXIII leupold 3.5-10x40
Even the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 would look good.

What ever you do don't cheap out on you optics, I use a formula of spending no less than 2/3 of the new purchase price of the rifle for optics purchases.

Good luck, and let us know what you settled on and some pics would be nice too.

Grandpa,
Resist any urge to take a slim Ultralight rifle like the Kimber and mount a big honking ugly scope on it.
Yea, these threads always include the suggestion to put a huge, almost target size, scope on a hunting rifle. High power fixed scopes, like the Leupold 6x surely will show up later.

As good as these scopes are, they offer no low end flexability, while being heavy and more expensive.

As one of the fixed-power fans here, I suggest a 6x fixed scope like the Weaver K6 or Leupold FXII 6x36. I've used both but have more extensive knowledge of the Leupold (albeit mine are all M8 still)

I have a leupold vxIII 4.5-14X40 on my kimber.
Its small and has great magnification, I live on the praries so that high power comes in pretty handy

Dustin,
Fixed powers are for people who can make up their own mind, for those that have to ask there's variables. You have to break down and buy a 6x42mm FX111 BTW.

Nah...Leupold needs to break down and make the 6x36 an FXIII

FYI the Bushnell's subjective lens bell (the piece close to your eye) is quite large and will cause you to mount the scope fairly high on the Kimber. Something like a Leupold compact or the Weaver K or V series have much smaller subjective bell dimensions. Just a thought.

Cheers
