nightforce all the way ......... hate my leupold VXIII .....and go with the 56 mm here is one of my posts in a different forum
Well, depending on what province your in, you may not got drawn (as in a lottery type system) for moose for years. As your first rifle, I would definitely NOT vote for a 300 win mag though unless you have alot of experience shooting otherwise it may give you a flinch that's hard to get rid of later.
For what you want to do, there's several rounds to choose from, but keep in mind, unless you plan on vaporizing a rabbit on bullet impact a moose caliber (.300WM) is going to be WAY overkill for a rabbit. On the other extreme a rabbit/deer hunting caliber (.243 for instance) is going to simply tickle the moose. There are plenty of choices, but I'd recommend something more middle of the road like say a 7mm Rem Mag that works well on both moose and deer, and then spend the couple hundred bucks and buy a Ruger 10/22 for rabbits, gophers, etc.
Find some hunting buddies, and see what they shoot with in your area, ask them why they chose that caliber and what critters it's good for.. ask to shoot a couple rounds through it if possible to get a feel for how much kick it has.
And for the love of gawd, don't waste your money on a Remington 700 SPS.. they are the biggest piles of crap ever to come out of the Remington factory. They feel cheap and have poor repeatable accuracy. Buy either buy a Savage with accutrigger, or buy a higher end Remington like the 700 BDL, either gun will do a much better job.
You could also try asking on the CanadianGunNutz.com forum in the hunting rifles section if you want more details and opinions.
Oh, and what Brent said, he's right.. stay away from a autoloader (semi-auto) rifle..
As for pile of crap how do you explain 1" groups and one hole shots ( 7 -3 shot groups like this in one afternoon ) I think that would constitute repeatable accuracy no ?? 1 shot ( 70 yrds ) 1 dead moose this fall . OK maybe not the most expensive rifle but it does have one kick-a$$ scope .... maybe you have/had a scope that failed you . I just can't see any reputable rifle co. ie Remington Winchester Weatherby etc putting out as poor of quality rifle as you are insinuating even in lower end rifles . Anyway just my $.02
