Rifle suggestions for a newbie

The trusty old 30/30 isn't a bad option either. Ammo is fairly cheap for target shooting, it doesn't have any recoil, and is a perfect deer/black bear rifle at modest ranges.

Any centerfire rifle will do fron 6.5x55 on up. As charlie38 says, go to DelSedin's and try a few on for size. At the bottom, fit is going to be more importan then the cartridge that the rifle is chambered for.

Also I consider that the .243 and .25 bore rifles more specalist and suiterable for a marksmen!

There is a big gun show in Kamloops on the weekend of April 26 and 27. Great place to shop and lots of deals if you have cash. Huge pile of guns in one place. I have a 30-06 but I prefer to shoot my 308 cuz it kicks a bit less and I can usually get cheap ammo to shoot. Pretty much anything that you can legally hunt can be taken with the bigger 30cals anyways so enjoy the shopping and let us know what you get. Most of us have the big 4 somewhere in our pile-308 or 30-30, 30-06,22lr, and a 12ga or some type of shotgun. Lets you hunt pretty much anything that crawls or flies. All of the calibres have some use but you have to make some choices to start up. You can own them all later HAHAHA

not that nice for a newbie that doesnt reload.
i just went to 3 stores including Crappy Tire and not only did they not have any .25-06 but two of the clerks hadnt even heard of it and tried to tell me that i needed .30-06.

in ontario it seems that often only gun shops will carry the caliber, which is a small drawback whether people like to admit it or not.

First things first ... Newbies would be well advised to stay away from the "Canucky Tires", "Marts" and "Big Box" stores ... patronize the smaller gun shops ... you may pay a nickel or dime more ... but you'll find a wealth of experience and as often as not, good advice which seems to be lacking or totally non-existant from the clerks at the biggies. Like manbearpig related ... two clerk's who hadn't even heard of the .25-06 ... jeepers, it's been around since what, 1922 or so as a wildcat ... and in commercial form since 1969.

For the criteria you've mentioned, and a few others have alluded to ... have a look at something like a .260, 6.55x55 or 7mm-08. Tikks T3's and Remington 700's are pretty hard to beat as good, off-the-shelf rifles. These calibers with good factory loads are more than capable of what you want to do with them.

the department type stores suck, but they can be useful sometimes.
many hunting trips usually have at least one guy that announces he 'just has to make a quick stop for ammo'.
at least the CTC and Wally World type stores are everywhere, open most of the time and carry the vanilla calibers.

yeah i know :(
you gotta realise though that the average gunnut that posts here is not the average Joe hunter that just takes his guns out of the basement/attic for a couple days every year.

the non-gunnut type seems pretty absentminded when it comes to keeping track of their magazines, ammo, reg certs, hearing protection, etc. i always bring an extra rifle, ear plugs, a small pouch with multitool and torx/allen keys, etc with me and more often than not someone ends up using them.... even if its just the sling off my spare rifle.

although i do let them panic a little first before i tell them no worries, i have a spare :)

LOL, good for you I would let them sweat too!
I suppose you're right about the 25-06 being a bit hard to find outside wholesale sports or actual hunting supply shops. 7mm might be a better choice in that regard since you can find it at any wally world or crappy tire store--- point taken.
I was only thinking ideal all around load, not necessarily about all other aspects.
