Rifle suggestions please

Don't start out with a .22, it could get you used to no recoil and next thing you know you've got a magnum eye because of your uncle's .270.

Dumb idea. Get a 22 for cheap fun an dpractice, and to cure you of flinching when you get whacked once too often by the loudenboomer you'll end up buying (and it'll likely happen...both of 'em).

Anyone that suggests that any firearm owner should be without a 22 LR need to open a window and let some fresh air in.

Ugly was right, everyone needs a .22 . Great for practicing your skills and recreational plinking. A .22 is probably the only ammo you can shoot all day without breaking the bank. It's practical.

Nice thing about the 10/22 is all the aftermarket stuff available, especially if you want custom stocks, barrels, or just to dress it up. It does cost though. If you would be happy with a standard stock, I too have heard the Marlin 7000 shoots excellent out of the box, and no costs past the checkout counter (except for scope).

I have 3 semis and I use them all more or less for plinking here
are some pros and cons.

Marlin 795 same as 700 except light barrel.
Very cheap especially now. Extremly accurate Ive got hole on hole groups
at 50 yrds. A friend of mine play kill the crickets with high power scopes in the summer at the range. Very compact and light weight. Feeds very well and have had very few jams. Some adjustment to the metal magazines might be needed. Only problem is the trigger seems a little heavy. I hear that can be adjusted though. Mine is scoped and is very reliable for hunting.
Accuracy is astounding. Not a lot of companies can do what marlin does it seems.

Remington 552 speed master
Easy to take apart and clean. Attractive styling. will shoot short long, LR.
No magazine to load, tube fed 15LR or 25shorts. Nice crisp trigger. Accuracy is decent. No real complaints great plinker. Only they can be a little expensive in new condition. I got mine used but see the new price as fair. They are really cool and require no after work.

Ruger 10/22 International.
Very fun very reliable. No jams yet. Good quality. very easy to clean.
Lots of fun to shot. I mean really really fun to shoot. I didnt understand all the hype untill i bought one. The ruger is my most recent purchase.
Ive also shot a stock model and didnt find the pull to bad. My buddy has never complained either. Although he hasnt shot mine yet. but the pull is about half.. My 10/22 has all new volsquarten internals but ive kept the stock barrel. Accuracy is also decent i find. On the range I can nail pop cans with it at 50 yrds. Most people seem overly critical about them. My friend who i mentioned has never had any complaints on accuracy. So for small game and general plinking you will be happy. Ive got see through mounts so i take advantage of iron sights and a scope. Dont have any complaints since i bought mine as a kit essentially finnished the way i want it anyways. If it not for all the 25 plus mags and customablitity I probably would have stuck with the other two. Also the international stock is kick ass. Dont know why it went out of production. I always thought rugers were soooo ugly. I like wood.
Just so you know if you like semi auto 22 you will probably buy a 10/22.
Some day.

One more thing though. If you dont like loading magazines tube fed will be the way to go. I can load all 15 rounds of the 552 in about 15 seconds. If you dont mind get a clip fed. You might also want to look into a marlin model 60.

Of all three rifles ive got I would say they are all equally good it just depends on preference.

It's getting close. I've narrowed it down to a Marlin 7000 semi or a Savage Mark II-FV Bolt. Or, I could probably change my mind in the morning and start all over again!!!!!! AAaaaaarrggghhh, the pressure's driving me GUNNUTZ:D

Is this at a local store?
If so go in if you haven't already, and handle, and shoulder both.
Take out the mags and see how well they work for you, inspect the finish etc.
Nothing beats hands on shopping.

My vote is for the heavy barrel Marlin 7000...next will be scope choice. :)

Buy them both. You know you want to. ;) :D

I've owned a 10/22 and I still own a CZ 452 American. After customizing the Ruger 10/22 to get it to shoot the way I wanted it, I ended up spending more money than the stock CZ.

The CZ is every bit as accurate and fits me better. I hunt and shoot mostly bolt guns so working the bolt of my .22 is good practice for my centerfires.

Having said that both are fun to shoot.

Soooo, if I was going to buy a .22 I would save up and buy a CZ Varmint or the American. They are not "cheap" but either will last you your lifetime and be as accurate as you need. I've never met anyone who regretted buying one.

Starting with a good quality .22 bolt action is the way to go IMO. And will be good practice for when you get your 700p.

My 2 cents.

I got a little ahead of myself and already bought a scope. Picked up a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40. :D

Why not look for a model 69 or 69A winchester, 513T remington, 541S or 541T remington? they show up at reasonable prices from time to time in Canadian Access to Firearms and Gunrunner, and can usually show good acuracy.

I'm afraid the Bushnell Elite 10x40 is not a good choice for a 22 rimfire, since it does not have an adjustable objective and is the focus is intended for longer ranges that a 22 rimfire usually encounters.

Therefore, you have no choice but to get a 17HMR. I recommend an Anschutz 1517D-HB heavy barrel.
