What are rifled barrel shotguns good for ?
I'm thinking of geting a rifle barrel for the 870...
Would those .50 sabot slugs be good for bear protection and deer hunting ?
They are pretty expensive rounds tho.
 
Rifled barrels are made foe saboted slugs. They are really a muzzleloader bullet, traveling at muzzleloading velocities. If you want protection, get a plain bore and shoot rifled slugs and buckshot. Don't put sabot slugs through a chocke tube, and don't put buckshot down a rifled barrel.

More than a 45-70 gvt... wouldn't call it a 'muzzleloader'
 
I've got a rifled barrel for my 870 (came as a package deal). I've found most slugs are rifled for use in smooth bores and the few that aren't are sabot slugs which are much more expensive. The latter are more accurate than the former, so better for deer hunting, but lots of deer are taken with the former, so they are good enough. And the smooth bore certainly allow more variety of ammo choices which probably includes more effective projectiles for a charging bear. I haven't had to defend against a bear, so I can't report on the effectiveness of the sabot slugs for that.

The Brenneke slug is often said to be the best shotgun round for bear defense. Can anyone here tell me whether it can be used in a rifled barrel?
