Rifled slug in a smooth bore

Just to add a bit of extra info, as far as I'm aware of the rule of thumb is:
Sabot Slug - Rifled Barrel
Rifled Slug - Smoothbore Barrel (Although I've heard that Brennake & "Thug Slug" style slugs can be run in either barrel with acceptable accuracy)

I tried some sabots (different brands) in a smoothbore. 2 of 3 shot POA and #3 was a flyer. Rifled slugs were very good.

The rifling on a slug is intended to give a crush zone to the slug as it passes through a choke. This is why it is safe in a choked smoothbore.

To add to that, I do believe that the cylinder choke is the one most recommended to use for rifled slugs although others will work.

Dont use sabot slugs in a smooth barrel. They arent designed for smooth bore, are expensive and they arent accurate. As other posters say, no tighter than an IC choke (improved cylinder). Rifled slugs give really good results up to the 80 yard range when fired out of a smooth bore barrel with IC choke.

General rule ->> rifled slugs in smooth barrel, smooth slugs (i.e. sabot) in a rifled barrel

Hope that helps

Wow, thanks guys. I plan to use them for self protection should I have another grizz encounter and I really need to put it down. If I have to, it will only be few meters distance so I don't think accuracy will be a factor.

sabot slugs are sub caliber in a plastic sabot.not all foster slugs are rifled but hey will still work in smooth bored guns because they stabilize by weight forward they don't need the grooves in them that's a crush zone as said about it gives excess lead somewhere to go when squeezed through a choke
