rifled slugs and backbored barrels

Hi guys,

Has anyone ever heard of any trouble with shooting rifled slugs and shotguns with backbored barrels? One gent on another forum was the first to mention that it is an issue. I'd like to use Brenekke Black Magic 3" but I won't bother if there is problems with this.

Mossberg says not to use slugs in their back bored barrels (models 835 pump and 935 semi). I think this may be an accurracy issue though rather than a safety issue. Might be best to check with them though if the gun in question is a Mossy.

Why bother when you can buy the combo with the rifled barrel for $100 more anyway?
 
I have shot foster style slugs including Brennekes through a Browning Back bored barrel with great accuracy.
The issue is with the Mossberg Over-Bore barrels is weird, they make a rifled choke tube that allows the use of slugs so I don't understand what the supposed problem is?
I would like to see something from Mossberg that says no rifled slugs?
 
From page 5 of the 835 owners manual:

"835 models are designated to fire 12 gauge 2-3/4", 3" or 3-1/2" factory loaded ammunition. Do not fire slugs of any type (single projectile ammunition) through the overbored Accu-Mag barrel. This barrel is designated to shoot lead or steel pellet shot loads only. Use only 835 barrels designated specifically for slug shooting."

It does seem wierd that they recommend no slugs, but there you have it. I can't imagine how it could be a problem, particularly since its not a problem with any other manufacturer. The owners manuals are downloadable from the Mossberg sight if anybody would like to see it for themselves (look under customer service).
 
It states that the barrels are overbored not back bored. Overbored barrels are opened up more than backbored barrels, the wad from shot shells will expand enough to still get a good gas seal. In a overbored barrel since slugs don't expand as shot shells do there could be a loss of gas pressure and you could end up with a squib. Backboring and overboring are two different methods trying to achieve similar things, except with backboring you still get good results with slugs.

Mossbergs are .775" overbore, the Browning backboreds are .742" regular 12Ga are what around .731. The mossberg has a way bigger bore, probably wouldnt shoot slugs good but the brownings probably would.
