So many varying answers....

i have a box of rio royal star slugs. 12ga. im pretty sure they are rifled slugs.

Can i shoot this through a smooth bore shotgun?

Aside from full, does it matter which one i use?

and chokes wear out?

Rifled Slugs sometimes called Foster Slugs were "meant" to be fired in a smooth bore.

It is often suggested that you use a cylinder or improved cylinder choke. I have shot them from modified chokes without any issue (and shot them on purpose to see how they shot - I always carry a couple of slugs when bird hunting just in case Yogi comes along and wants to play :) ) - honestly can't remember if I tried through a full or not.

It's the Sabot slugs that's are designed for fully rifled barrels that will give you varying results from not bad, to terrible through a smooth bore.

I'm no expert....but I've shot literally a hundred or so thru my 12 gauge full choke smooth bore with no problem. I used to do some long range stuff with them just for fun, pretty accurate i found. Barrel cleaned up well mirror finish and still shiny like new for being made in the mid 70s. I also used them on a mossberg tactical shotgun too with about 40 rounds fired with no problems. Have fun THEY ARE ADDICTING. Also I could of been very wrong by doing so but all worked good for me. I still have all 7 fingers. KIDDING !!!

In case you missed it, foster slugs are fine through a full choke. Anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken. At worst they will be less accurate, you likely won't even notice. This only applies to fixed and internal threaded chokes. External threaded chokes like found on some Italian sporting and tactical shotguns sometimes warn against slugs.

The grooves in a rifled SLUG are there to make it easy for the slug to squeeze down when going though a choke. They are designed to be shot in a choked smoothbore. Any choke will work, but if you have a choice, try Imp Cyl.

Brain fart fixed.

Amy choke that's no more than full, right? (Eg no turkey chokes ect)

Take a cartridge apart and remove the slug. Drop the slug down the barrel and you will see how loose a fit it really is. It is the wads that seal the bore, not the slug.

i think thats a valid statement but i think they mean the rifling on the slugs can still be compressed by the choke, and same with the wad as it is plastic.

Foster style rifled slugs are also hollow and easily deformed by hand so squeezing through a full choke is no problem. Are the Challenger slugs also Foster style? Either way soft lead vs smooth steel is no issue.
