Any old milsurp in 8mm or 7.62 will work just fine inside of 150 yards or so. 303 british lee enfield also.

how much do you want to spend? preference for action type? do you reload? how long of shots do you expect?

Start with your Pal and Hunter's Safety course.
"...Any old milsurp in..." Nearly any milsurp will do. Some of the Japanese and Italian cartridges won't. The others will be fine long past 150 yards if the rifle shoots well enough with commercial hunting ammo.

IMO you should buy a used sporter from the EE. A milsurp will do but for hunting, get something that will take a scope easily.
