I am curently taking 3rd year machining and we are doing helical milling. I was wondering if it would be posible to do single point rifle cutting useing the dividing head linked to the lead screw but instead of a milling cutter in the spindle haveing the single point cutter bolted to the machine on the column or the head.

I have thought about this method that you are thinking of, and the old "anything is possible" comes to mind, but wouldn't you need an awfull lot of table travel to run 26 inches of cut. Allowing for dividing head, gear train drive, length of pull rod plus cutter box etc. The same notion crossed my mind when I had a twenty six inch hydraulic shaper, using the stroke to draw the cutter and having the barrel blank anchored on the table. Anyway my brain got overtaxed and I opted for a beer instead. Keep thinking D.H.

Rifling is done on a lathe. Sort of. It's actually a purpose built machine. Helical milling is for making timing screws, drills, etc.

Cut rifling is the most time consuming way to rifle a barrel.

If you can do helical machining, consider button rifling. You can make the button. Then you just need to rig something up to pull it through the barrel. Preferably something with hydraulics. I have heard of guys modifying a log spliter for this purpose.

Heres some info that may help:

Button rifling doesn't produce as good of a barrel as cutting though.
