Rilfe Stock Refinishing

This is my beat up russian sks. The wood was in particulary bad shape so i stripped it and put 2 coats of stain and 4 coats of antique oil finish. Still a bit crude but better than he was......

Here it is, sorry for the poor quality cell phone pictures.

The grain in the arctic birch isn't all the interesting, so I gave the wood some tiger stripes with a propane torch.

Hi, looks like you did a nice job on your sks stock. How did you strip the original finish? I have a chinese sks and the finish on the stock has seen better days. I wouldn't mind trying to re-finish it. Any suggestions you can provide would be helpful.

You've never heard of using an open flame to give wood more character? That's one of the oldest tricks in the book. Normally you wouldn't give the wood stripes with it mind you.

I wouldn't have given it the tiger stripes if the grain was somewhat desirable, but this arctic birch is splotchy, and doesn't have much going for it.

I would have sprung for a $4 can of stain myself.... but hey, to each their own.

Heirlooms will even take off your skin if you let it ! I striped my entire kitchen with Heirlooms in one hour lol and it had 5 coats of paint on the walls! where ever I put Heirlooms! look out !

Anywhere in Canada I can buy unfinished SKS stocks??? I'd like to keep my original one the way it is, but want to experiment with different stains on some others

are SKS stocks generally a universal fit? or does a Russian SKS need a Russian stock. Seems to be a few Norinco stocks available but not sure if they'd fit right

if they don't minor wood removal is not bad.

oohh yea man ! heirlooms is freaking nutz GUNNUTZ that is , did it actually get the krylon off the CZ?

Plain old brake cleaner takes Krylon off in a jiffy. I paint my VZ so much that it's a staple in the shop.

Those look very nice, im thinking i might bookmark this and do my SKS as well, i love it but the shellac is flaking off in places, and just plane gone in others, so i see no reason not to do a cleanup, would like to do my Mosin too but im afraid i might ruin it... Ah what the hell, if it makes it look good why not.
