The continuing search for okay priced rimfire ammo, that will shoot half decent at 100 yards carries on.
The last 'test' perplexed me. Remington "Target" ammunition was selected and shot from the bench on a windless day, using a proven rifle & scope.

Ultimately the Remington "Target" ammunition, sometimes would shoot superbly. Only to add enough fliers at 100 yards, to turn a 10 shot, 1 inch possible group, to two or three inches........ These will be used for 25 yard pistol shooting only now!

A week earlier, with the same rifle and from the same support, I used Winchester Wildcat rimfire ammo at 100 & 200 yards, and was rewarded with much better consistancy in groups. :D

The quest continues.......
PS: I've tried Lapua Club, Federal Match, Eley EPS. Just looking/hoping for cheaper "good" ammo in one specific rifle.
Lately Wildcats are it, and everyone seems sold out of Remington Subsonics.

One can say, accurate AND inexpensive are rarely found in the same box of 22 LR ammunition.

Winchester Wildcats are my cheap go to rounds as well.. Winchester high velocity stuff does the job too...

When I want to reach out to 200-300 yards, I use Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. The Green Mountain barrels I have love it. I dont run anything Remington through my guns. Too dirty and accuracy was garbage..

Yep... you couldn't give me that crap for free... I wouldn't even throw it down range, not worth getting my hands dirty over.

No Offense Brutus but I highly doubt you are going to find mid-priced/inexpensive 22LR ammunition that will consistently give you 1" at 100m. The problem I found doing the search myself was that you would inevitably get 3-4 good shots and then one massive flyer because of load charge/crimping/priming/etc. My recommendation is to try Lapua Master series (step below Midas) but even then it runs like 10 bucks a box so it isn't cheap persay. Eley Black Box EPS is pretty good and not as expensive as TENEX but it is also not as cheap as say Wildcat/subsonic/T22/etc.

Glock, I hear you on cost/accuracy, I was just putting feelers out to see if anyone has found the 'right' combination. I have found Lapua products very satisfying too. But, up here in Cold Lake though (and Edmonton area) I find any Lapua brand impossible to find.
This shooter would be a very happy person, if I could order/buy the 500 rd bulk pack of Lapua Standard Club at least.
(Cost within reason, say $50-60 per 500 rd unit)
I used to buy this in Echo Lake, NS, from Peter Dobson, a Lapua dealer.

I have found the only 'bulk' ammo that shoots worth a crap at 100y is CCI Blaser (lead Round Nose bullets)

You can buy it in 50rnd packs and in 525rnd bulk boxes. It's all the same tho, so no real reason to buy the little boxes.

I get good 10 shot groups at 50 (.5") & 75 (.75") yrds, but once I try shooting at 100 I consistanly get groups at around a 1.25"..... But I don't have a super accurate target rig either, just a Factory MKIIFV and a 10/22 with a 16.5" GM barrel. I am pretty sure if I bed the action and 'accuruze' my .22's I could do much better...... I've been saving those projects till winter.....

Cheers!

Here is an off-the-wall question - where are you storing your ammunition? Most ammo is fairly stable, but sometimes it doesn't like sitting out in the sunshine. I've known shooters who put their target loads in a picnic cooler for consistency.

Secondly, have you examined the rounds for variations? I remember seeing a little wedge gadget in the Champion's Choice catalog (12-15 yrs ago) that measured the thickness of the rim. Cheap ammo means high speed and many many different machines. If you fire two adjacent rounds out of the box that are at the extremes of tolerances, you will get fliers.

Brutus: Peter does ship but you would need to buy bulk lots to make it reasonable. I recommend you call up Gunsnthings (Blackie, AB) as he isn't a sponsor I can't put up a link but he sold me Lapua Master M/L and Eley Tenex. He can get any of the rimfire ammos in that you would be interested in and his pricing is pretty reasonable. I put in an order for like 80-90 bucks I think and got half a brick each of Lapua Master M/L (500 rounds total) but that was over a year ago so I don't know if his pricing has changed. His pricing isn't out of line but it isn' spectacular either. He is a great guy though and will give you any quantity you want of various lots to try and does give a bit of a price break for quantity buys. Hope this helps.

What rifle are you shooting with?

An older ES 350B commercial German Mauser, made for 22LR, this is not a conversion. It is a single shot bolt action, kind of made for match shooting circa Edit:1937'ish. (heavy/long) The blueing is deep/dark/awesome, so at some point a past owner had it refinished.

Presently a Weaver T-10 Microtrac is mounted on it.

I've had good luck with Fiocchi SV in my CIL 310. It shoots about as well as I can off of my crappy rest and does really well for sporter class silhouette. I'm getting 10-20 shot groups in the 1.5" range at 100m so I consider that to be pretty consistant.
Cheers,
Grant
