Rimfire Ammo - Best for Pistol?

Hi All,

I'm seriouslly looking into a Rimfire Pistol for practice, but i'm unsure of what to get for ammo.
So many choices, so many reviews.

I'm looking at going with the Sig P226 Classic 22LR and want to use the best ammo while breaking it in.

I'd like to hear what is suggested by people who shoot 22 with a pistol.
 
You should pick up a box of each brand/type, rim fire semi pistols can be picky. So it's best if you find the best ammo for your gun
 
The shape of the bullet is an important factor as well for many guns. For instance, my SW Victory gets very nice groups with CCI LRN 40g SV, but shaves lead off the bullet feeding sometimes. So I used the "tactical" brand with the slightly more narrow and elongated head.

Like above, but 50 of every brand in your store and experiment. Two people could have the exact same gun, but results can vary from barrel to barrel.

Most people agree though, you are more likely to have a better all around experience with CCI copper plated, like mini mags.
 
I've shot quite a bit of 22 rimfire over the years, and for basic shooting, I think it's hard to beat CCI ammo. As mentioned, the Mini-Mags are a decent choice. It's not true for ever instance, but I have found that copper plated high velocity ammo is usually a bit more reliable in semi-autos.
 
Federal 525-round Value Pack or Auto Match would be my pick for cheap stuff; CCI Standard Velocity for quality stuff.

CCI Blazer is another good value-priced option, but it isn't always easy to find in quantity.

x 2. My semi 22 pistols love the Federal Auto Match and the CCI. Can't go wrong with either as a value priced option. You can get slightly more accurate stuff but depends and wallet and amount you shoot.
 
Might as well break it in and season the barrel a bit before trying lots of different ammo.
500-1000 rounds of Mini-mags would be a good start.

It all depends, some of my guns dont know the difference and shoot about the same with either ammo. Other guns seem to be fussier.

Agreed. I have had limited success in pulling RF rounds to see the differences. Some of the main ones that come to mind is small case irregularities (rim thickness) and bullet weights.
Powder charge is more or less spot on, hard to tell about the primer.
