What .22 hollow point works best for gophers & small game for the kill. I'm asking before I stock up this spring. I have been buying the Winchester 333 packs right now because the hollow point seem to be deeper then most. I'm still in the building stages on the gun so I can't do testing yet.

+1. I had to mess around with my 10/22 to find a bullet it liked. Are you shooting an auto or manual op? i'd like to buy a bolt action just so I can shoot anything .22 lr out of it. Get a few different brands and weights in boxes of 50 before you start buying bulk.

My guns seem to like the Federal bulk pack hollow point ammo-- which suits me fine as they are the cheapest! They work very well on gophers, pigeons, magpies and all other varmints I've hit with them so far. Very good expansion and accuracy.
I have a Browning T bolt and a Remington 597. Both guns shoot all ammo fairly well whether it's hp or solid, but I get the best groups out of Federal stuff.

what ever shoot's best in your gun. we use alot of remington yellow jacket's.
the trunicated cone opens up real good, but some gun's will not shoot well with
them.

I really prefer the federal champion 525 packs in my savage. It hates winchester ammo! sprays em all over the place, and i find 2 or3 bullets in each box (500) don't fire.

My little KKJ shoots the Win 333 and Win Xpert very well. I just got it back from the gunsmith today. Floated the barrel and bedded the action. We will see if it shoots them better or not. It also shoots the Federal bulk packs well. Big hollow point on the Winchesters kills squirrels immediately.

+1 for the American Eagle 38 Grain Hp's. I tried the CCI Velocitor's however they don't open up on gophers as much as I thought they would. I really like the Remington Yellow Jackets, anchor's gophers right where they are hit. But, I find the Remingtons really dirty but are a good lever action round when shooting with open sights.

The Yellow jackets definitely have a visible terminal advantage over standard velocity hp ammo, but I've also noticed that Win Xperts do nearly as well, and are much cheaper.

At the end of the day, extra terminal performance means nothing if your bullet misses its mark. Try a few different brands of hp ammo, including the Xpert and yellow jacket, and shoot whichever is most accurate.

I'm another fan of the American Eagle HPs. You can always try the pen trick if you want to open up a HP cavity.

Pen Trick on hollow points to open them up, what are the details....
As for ammo, American Eagle Hollow points have worked well in my CZ ,
VTR and in my last Sako Fin Fire. The latter also ate up CCI Quick Shocks and will wait till the rain stops falling to get out and verify my new to me Sako Fin Fire.
Really there is no need to stockpile ammo until you find out what your gun likes until you complete your build. That is just my .02 opine on that topic.

KDX , thanks for the link.
I knew it was to easy to be true, but the blonde in me
just had to ask.

Here's a link to a discussion from the Rimfire forum. I think there are a few others if you use 'pen trick' in the search. Paco Kelly makes a tool also.

Bah!
Not in the CTC store I was just in 30 min ago...I almost s**t my pants. Federal "VALUE paks" (and I use the term "value" loosely) for $29.99 a box!!!!
Omg! I bought those this past spring from the same store for $21.99/bx.
And just a few shelf spaces away was the Winchester HP 500/bx for $21.99 I shoulda bought another dozen boxes.

I wonder if .22 is becoming more popular in the States and that is why the price has gone up.

AE hollow points and CCI mini mags are tops in my books for accuracy, and probably have good expansion, problem is availability. Federal bulk hollow points work fine and probably don't contribute one iota to gopher misses. On a gopher, even solids get the job done.
