So I am curious to know why some people pick certain caliber's of ammo in comparison to others.

Not bashing anyones opinions just wondering...

Why shoot 22 wmr when it is the same price where I am located for the same amount of 17hmr ammo, plus 17 hmr even with a heavier grain round is still faster then any 22 wmr round?

Also I dont see the point of 17hm2, if your going to spend that much on ammo why not go to 17hmr? it is easier to find in stores.

22lr > 22 short : LR is easier to find, still cheap for the quantity of ammo, good stoping power up to 100 yards, faster velocity on LR

17hmr > 22 wmr : 17hmr both are easy to find, same price, but 17 has a much higher velocity

17 hmr > 17 mach 2 : why not just buy in hmr? almost there, harder to find hm2, hmr has faster velocity

I do know that wmr round has been out way before hmr, so it makes sense to have owned one prior to hmr

please explain your choices and why!!!

Ok,,
Where to start…
Well, each one of these rimfires has a place of its own.
For some all they need is a 22LR and there is nothing wrong with that as long as it does what it needs to do.

Speaking for myself,
I have a 22 LR which is my squirrel hunting rifle for short ranges.
Once the leafs have al fallen from the trees I can make longer shots and for that I use my HM2 because trajectory is much much better than a 22. as long as I make head shots im good. ( I wish they would make HM2 in a hunting round, which is more meat friendly).
I wouldn’t think of using the HMR on any small game even rabbits because it would completely blow them up.
However accuracy is just like a laser beam from the HMR and I have used it on coyotes successfully at close range.
The 22WMR would actually might be even better suited for the job since it has a heavier bullet.

So I believe there is a place for each of the rimfires
I hope this clarifies a bit of your question.
Have a look at rimfire central. Lots of good information for each calibre.

Cheers.

You've partly answered the question yourself - "variety is the spice of life".
But to add to that:
-Improved killing power on live targets
-requirement by competition rule
-it's there so why not own one
-there are rimfire shooters just like there are centrefire shooters
Compare choices in centrefire like 6mm Rem vs 243Win or 223Rem vs 222Rem Mag and countless others.

Why use anything other than a muzzle loader? Heck, a bow and arrow will kill most everything.

Every round has it's own reason to be. Not everyone needs every round, most people won't have a use for hm2, but that doesn't mean there aren't guys who love the round. If anything a lot of it is the ammo and firearms manufacturers, just putting things up the flag pole to see if anyone salutes. 22lr is cheap, readily available, and very effective, but they'll sell a lot more guns if there are different chamberings available.

And the shorts, and longs, and winchester rimfires, a lot of that is ammo companies back in the day having their own proprietary cartridges. Old firearms are still chambered as such, which means they may not be strong enough for higher powered loadings. Also the CB's and sub sonics, a lot of people just like them as they are quieter.

The reason for people's choices are as individual as they are in many cases.
