I kind of got volunteered to complete a "project" for an older friend... and while I can thinker on many aspect of it, barrel reprofiling is kind out of my league.

Part of it would involve reprofiling the barrel from a "heavy sporter" to a lightweight profile + drill/tap for a cantilever barrel mount.
- Anybody got a educated guess at the $ he's looking at?

I would think to turn a lighter contour and leave it polished and crowned would be $200 if the 'smith' doing it was not busy on other projects.

You could make it into an octagon barrel with a draw file, a small level and several hours.... No lathe required.

well 2 ways to do it on the lathe.

first set the taper attachment for the profile you desire and then cut it, chatter is something that you will need to be concerned with.

second, if you don't have a taper attachment, and I don't :( , set the barrel up between centers and using a face plat and dog to spin the barrel. then offset the tailstock to the desired taper you want, and cut it, again chatter is something you need to watch for.

of course the barrel will need to come off of the action.

as for you question on price, I don't know, I defer to the expert opinion above.

It would take me at least an hour, hopefully I don't screw it up, but I only work on my guns.

I like to use a steady rest and profile the barrel half and half. Done them over 36" long that way. Reduces the risk of chatter.
