Rimfire experts: Old Lakefield 22 repeater

I have a question for someone that might know about this old 22.
My Dad has a old bolt action 22. All he told me was The markings on it said: Mark II Repeater, Lakefield. He tried to remember and thought it was a 7 shot.
He said: above the action, the barrel was grooved, thinking a scope could be attached. Is this possible? Please understand, I am unfamiliar with this gun and most 22`s, he is 77 yrs old and the info he gave me was read right off the gun. If a scope can be attached, were these a good gun for accuracy? I know any questions on this forum asking what to buy....everyone and their dog says "buy a bolt action". Well I just inherited this tonight, I just have to make the 4.5hr round trip to get it!!!!

The Lakefield plant was bought by Savage and continues to produce the MKII, slightly updated, under their name.
It has a reputation for being an accurate shooter and good value for the price.
 
It would be cheaper for him to ship it to you and you pay for the shipping... But being your dad and all, a visit for a rifle is a pretty good trade.

The lakefield mark II is the early version of the Savage mark II. Essentially the same gun as far as i know. I dont know if they are as accurate as the new savages though, but iirc, they were grooved for a scope.
 
I have a MarkI from the early '80s; a good buddy has a Mark II same vintage and I am familiar with them. His Mark II has a 10 shot detachable mag; yes the receivers are grooved for a slide-on type scope mount.

You are better off to drill & tap them though, we tried a couple sliders many years ago & weren't impressed. Iron sights are fine for me though, although my eyes are getting pretty bad.

These rifles are fine rifles, well made & long lasting. Also CANADIAN made (at that time).

Accuracy not terrible, not comp quality but just fine. My Dad's 1930's vintage Winchester 67A still shoots circles around many of my rifles, we shot that Lakefield against his 67A more times than I could ever count.

You'll enjoy that rifle, it's a good one.
