Anyone here fire their rimfires in their backyards? I have a place out in the country and have shot skeet out there before, but with a nice little visit from the OPP. They just came, inspected our firearms (all 14 of them) and told us to carry on.

Now shotguns are much louder than a 22 and I can go back behind a forester where there are no neighbours on either side. Will this be an issue? Will people be able to hear the shots?

Thanks,

I use sub sonic ammo to reduce the noise when I shoot in my backyard. Mind you, I have a lot of acreage to shoot on, so I'm proably 600 or more yards from my nearest neighbour when I am shooting.
The sub sonic reduces the noise a fair bit, and for plinking paper or beer cans, it's fine.

Well its right beside the Luther Marsh, so I am guessing that during duck season it should be ok since it basically sounds like World War III out there anyways.
Poor little birdies!:D

Sample different ammo. some are much more quiet than others. CCI Stinger, and Win super X are loud as hell!

CCI CBs are quieter than my bb gun but only come in short and long.

Check your by-laws regarding discharge of firearms and noise regulations. If you're within these by-laws, shoot away.

Of course, I'm assuming you have an appropriate backstop and are following all other safety rules/guidelines while shooting.

This is one of THE reasons I now live out in the country again.

In the country, I do it all the time. I'm up here (Cariboo, BC) right now putting up with dial-up as I'm surfing the web...and I brought my Savage MK IIGL that I'm going to be firing tomorrow with sub sonics. The neighbours have fired off much larger guns, and I've fired my 12ga here before. Everyone out here don't mind as long as you are responsible and respectful. Nearest police station is at least 30 minutes away at high speed, so almost everyone out here has at least one firearm in the home...and as far as I know, crime is none existent.

Rule of thimb is 400m from nearest building, I have heard some cases where police would come and dig out shell from grass and measure the distance and write up ticket. That is if neighbours are pissed at you for some reason. And like someone mentioned earlier I would make sure you have some kind of backstop, just to be a good samaritian. Do not forget 12 ga and ANY rifle are two different animals, even slugs do not travel as far as 22 bullet.

:eek:Where does it say that in any regs?

Anyone here fire their rimfires in their backyards? ... Will people be able to hear the shots?

1) "Do we" and "are we supposed/allowed to" may be very different questions... :);):)

2) x 2 on the CB Longs - nice and quiet (you'll hear this over and over, so I thought I'd just drop it in for posterity).

It doesn't - some municipalities have this in their by-laws... hence why a ticket would be writen and not a FA charge etc.. Just find out what the by-laws in your area are and follow them.

So what you are saying is municiple bylaw states how close you may be to a building when you discharge a firearm?!? And people put up with that nonsense?

If there is no bylaw prohibiting the discharge in the first place then they had better have a warrant in their hand when they show up to look for brass and proof it didn't fall out of your pocket.

Honestly. I can't believe some of the crap you guys put up with in Ontario.......

By-laws may state "no discharge of firearms" area and if your property happened to be within those boundaries then it doesn't matter how far you are from nearest building. I gave 400m as rough guidance. Your best bet would be hunting regs, those are free at basically any government agent office, find your area and figure out yourself. Then if you are OK there will be no need to hide your muzzle report with CB's and other pussy-loaded rounds.

If they said carry on, carry on. The .22 will be quieter so go hard.

Everything I own I have shot off the back deck.

I used to shoot a lot of .22 there but don't have the range to shoot as I'd like and have since moved back into the field. My neighbours are good about it. I've been shooting skeets in the yard and had the neighbours show up... with their guns.

..And I'm in Ontario. Don't believe that there's no safe havens here anymore.

A friend of mine shoots .22 CB caps in his rec room, shooting over the pool table. The only downside is having to vacume residue off the pool table. Almost no noise at all so this would be unobtrusive almost anywhere.

well, if you wanna fire off a .22 in town. now its clearly illegal, but if you dont want it to be loud - i got a solution for you - haha - if you are using a bolt action .22 - check out Sellier & Bellot .22 Floberts, its a .22, and its not that loud. they are a little bit more expensive, but they are not that bad, i sell them at work.

How does this "Flobert" work in a magazine?

Digging up a .22 bullet in the dirt would be akin to finding a needle in a haystack, in a barn full of hay stacks, in a county full of barns...
