Rimfire Scope help please!

I'm looking at purchasing a scope for my Savage MkII GL .22lr. Do I need to buy a rimfire scope or can I put a centrefire scope on it? Is this where parallax comes into play? I've been looking at Leupold's VX-II 3-9x40. They also have the rimfire scope in 3-9x33 EFR. What is EFR? Both my girlfriend and I are learning to shoot with this rifle, she's already staked her claim on it, so this will become hers at some point and I will upgrade to a CZ 452. Any help would be appreciated! I want to be ready to buy if I see something on the EE.

The correct answer is yes and no. I use Bushnell Elite 4200's on my rimfires right now. Their parallax is adjustable from 10yds to infinity so they work great on a rimfire. Using my Leupold 4.5-14 to shoot gophers on my .204 Ruger it does not get you as close as the Bushnell will.

The Leupold EFR "Extended Focus Range" is designed to focus down to 10 yard so it is marketed as their rimfire scope. If you are like me and prefer the look of a side adjust over the front adjust you can get Korth (the Canadian importer of Leupold) to adjust the parallax range of the side adjust models to work (for a fee of course). You will loose some long distance adjustment but for a rimfire it should not be to big of a deal.
 
EFR's are a great scope if you can afford to spend that much money, if not Leupold make a very nice 2-7 x 28, retail for around $340.00.
Weaver make real good rimfire scopes but can be tough to find in Canada, Nikon make 2 rimfire pieces a 2-7 and a fixed 4 power. Both good value for the money.
From Bushnell , the Banner series have a couple scopes with the AO that are cheap relative to the others and do just fine on a 22 rifle. FS
