597 is certainly a contender... Full sized, accurate. If you feel the need for aftermarket, some bits are available. The heavy bolt/2 guide rail thing is a nifty innovation in the .22 world. 10 rd mags are almost flush (as much as I rant about 10/22's...that rotary 10rd/flush mag is very respectable). I love mine and, it was very affordable.
x2 on Cooey(64) as well. That was my first (and still fav.) .22. I've had quite a few 64's since and, love 'em. I adore my 64's but, sadly, I saw some Savages in a shop, new, beside Marlin 795 and, Rem597...they were quite a bit higher priced! Sad but, true...one of the most compelling factors in a 64 is/was bang for the buck!
There are all kinds of semi's not available new today that beat the cr@p out of any "new" offerings...87a(and all names) old Mossbergs (crazy accurate semi .22's) etc...
There are still some I'd like to try too: CZ512, Voere, etc...
Too many .22's and, so little time/$'s!!!
