I refinished a stock on a rifle I picked up used. Not only was the finish in poor shape, it must have sucked from new because it was just awful looking stuff even where it hadn't worn off. ( Bad Winchester!)

It is a Winchester model 190 .22 Semi-auto (15rd), Simmons 4x32 "Mag 22" scope. Should be a good shooter as it all cleaned up very well after hours of work.

It looks a lot different and I like it, the finish appeals to me in color and it is very smooth. The forestock looks a shade lighter in the pic, but it is just the lighting, it matches perfect.

Looks good!

Kinda funny. The companies put some pretty hideous stain on top of some pretty decent wood, all in the name of making the product look like the picture in the catalog.

I've seen some absolutely awesome wood emerge from under some truly gruesome factory finishes on old airguns.
Winchester was pretty fond of the red stain, on their walnut stocks, too!

Good work!

Remmie too. My first 870 Wingmaster was brown. Finish got scratched and started to lift around the scratch so I stripped it and put a linspeed finish on it. Man that stock glowed and the rubbed oil finish gave the grain I exposed a 3d effect that was amazing. The guys at the club range would not believe a 16 year old had done that nice a job but several tried to buy it. I have never been afraid to strip and refinish but I like rubbed oil finishes cuz they are supremely tough and so easy to patch up. Just make sure to treat the open end grain the same way and forget about it. Even paint stripper wont touch it.

I really thought about going darker, but chose this Pecan color becasue the girls (wife & daughter) thought it looked good after it was sanded (natural). I told them I have to treat the wood with something to protect it and went with a lighter color but something that has a bit oftone to it. I think it contrasts nicely with the black metal. Thanks for all the comments!
