Rimfires at 100M

Well, it was a scorcher out today, and had a bit of a squirrelly breeze to make it a challenge.

Took several rimfires out to see how they would shoot at 100M. [Suhl, 40X, M37, 541T, 541S, 52C, CZ 452 American]

Despite the unpredictable wind, these all performed as expected. The Suhl, 40x and 37 all turned in 5 shot groups under ½moa.[.38 - .44"]

the 52C, the 541T and the 541S made groups between .55" and .65". The CZ was slightly larger, but still acceptable at .76" to .91"

Never ceases to amaze me how much difference ammo can make on a rimfire. [none of the ammo used today was "bulk" of any ilk.]

Need to get ready for a BR match, so will try a few more groups later when it cools a bit. [hopefully]

Cheers, Dave.

Hey, Dave is the ammo used a secret or are you waiting to build excitement for the "big reveal?"

Thought I was doing good with my savage .42" ten shot group but at half the distance. I've made the switch to Eley practice. At only 69 cents more a box I thought I'd try them.
Good shooting

Nice shooting Dave got to love those Remingtons some guys at range think there is nothing better than the CZ there good, but not like the old Rems. especially those 40x
sure wish we could meet at a shoot like this it would be fun

Trying to get a new aperture so I can try and push mine out to 100...

Good thing about my range is it a baffled and 180 degree berm so it cuts alot of the wind out.

Nice shooting Dave went shooting myself yesterday with a pretty strong breeze and the best were not even close to yours good shooting

Nice Dave, what are you having luck with in the 541s? I have SK+, RWS (not sure what models right now), Polar, and a few boxes of others. Still trying the 5 shot/5 target 1/2" thing. I know a lot of the problem is years of bad shooting habits. Thanks Aj.

Ammo is no secret. Each Rifle has it's own preferences [no surprise]
However, the Suhl has a Harrel's tuner up front, so can work with different ammos if I want to spend the time finding the "sweet" spot.

The Model 37 prefers a certain lot of RWS Rifle match
The 40X shoots best with a lot of ELEY Match EPS [black box] @ 1059fps.
The Suhl also shoots this ammo very well, but does best with a lot of R50 RWS I have.

The 541T likes a lot of Midas M, the 541S prefers Lapua Center-X

The 52 C Sporter is shooting well with an older lot of R50 I have a few bricks of. [still in nickel plated cases, lol]

The CZ shoots everything decently, but really shines with RWS Rifle Match [PY4] or an early lot of PMC Zapper HV unplated. [Can you believe that?]

I have noted that sometimes the difference in ammo is undiscernable with only one or two groups, but as one shoots more, the preference becomes easier to see.

A mistake many make is changing ammo during testing, and rating it by the first few groups of the new ammo, which may mean nothing in a 22.

It may take up to 25 or more rounds of the different ammo to get it settled in.......then the groups may be meaningful.

I'll try to get some pics up later. For now, here's a set of 50M groups that are what one likes to see.

Regards, Dave.

When you try new ammo in a rimfire, how many rounds you shoot with it ?
Do you clean barrel between 2 brands of ammo ?

I usually run 3 or 4 dry patches through before I shoot the new ammo.

Then at least 20 rounds of the new ammo before shooting for group/score.

It is all related to the variety of lubes used by different manufacturers, and even within one manufacturer for different grades of ammo..
