Rimmed in a Ruger #1

I have owned several #1's over the years and none of them had a problem extracting fired rimless cases so I can't see any advantage with a rimmed case. With that said I think a #1 in .303 British would be very cool!

No. The #1 is different then the Handi-rifle which prefers rimmed cartridges. Rugers rifle has an extractor that engages the rim, rebated or not properly and I've never heard of anyone complaining of a stuck case under normal circumstances.

+1
however, THERE IS something elegant about a S/S and a rimmed case. :)

This is what I *think* too (re the extracor), but I was wondering if there was perhaps some other advantages/disadvantages with a rimmed cartridge. I guess not.

Thanks for the answers.

There's less to potentially go wring with a rimmed case in a single shot. The extractor on the rimless cases springs into the extractor groove. If that spring takes a dump extracting will be problematic. Now that said, I have a #1H in 458 Winchester that has never missed a beat, but a rimmed case is more fitting in a single shot and will never (short of catastrophe) have extraction issues.

Considering the fact that Ruger would probably never build a # 1 in 303 Brit., I think it would be worth knowing if any of the contributing gunsmiths/gun builders on this site would undertake such a project ?
I, for one would be interested in knowing more about such a build... :)

Leeper is building me one as we speak - with a half round, half octagon barrel, shadowline cheekpiece with ebony tip on a Alex Henry sized forend - wood by George at Treebone - OH, and EXPRESS SIGHTS!:D

Last year, Bill turned a "blah" 700 into an awesome little tack-driver for me so you can bet he will be getting a call with the topic being "Ruger 303 ".

Thanks for that Cat !! :)

He is going to do the chamber up with his competition reamer, so things are going to be real tight!:D

The gun already has a Kipplinger single set trigger in it, and the action is actually a #3, with the lever being bent to accomadate the big custom stock that was on it.
Bill is going to shorten the lever and do some "other stuff"
I'll be sure to post pics of the rifle and some groups when I get it!:)

ruger #1...303 Br

Like many others here, I too would like a #1 in .303 Br. This is not an 'American' desirable, but certainly would likely be reasonably popular in Canada and other places of Forner British influence.

Maybe not impossible! Many Dealers, stores, etc in the US, manage to convince manufacturers to make them an exclusive run of a particular variant of their standard guns.

Maybe if enough of us express 'SINCERE' interest, (read - cash Down!) we could convince Clay at Prophet river to enquire with ruger about getting a special run of #1's, produced in .303..!!!

Just a thought!! How about it Clay??
