I have a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308. It is currently glass-less. It sits in an HS Precision stock.

I am planning on getting a Sightron Siii 8-32x56mm scope with the LRMOA reticle.

I will be using a canted base (20 moa). I don't know what the proper height of rings is with the canted base. My barrel is .820" diameter (factory SPS varmint heavy barrel).

Would medium rings provide adequate clearance for the scope bell? If I have the sunshade installed would medium rings still provide enough room to work with?

Thanks

I have a set of high TPS rings on a Nightforce 20MOA base on my SPS-V with a Sightron SIII 8-32 x 56 and I find them a little too high. Thankfully I have an adjustable cheek piece. If I could do it over I'd get the medium.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have the sunshade as well? If so, how much room do the high rings leave you with it installed?

i have high rings with weaver bases and i have about a 3/16ths of an inch to the barrel, if i had a taller base i would defiantly go with medium rings

Thanks FTRRookie.

I calculated the distance between your scope bell and barrle based on your picture, assuming that is the factory SPS varmint heavy barrel (.820" diameter). I decided to order a Nightforce 20 moa rail with medium height Nightforce rings (1" high).

Barrel height: 44 pixels = .820 inches
Distance between scope bell and top of barrel in picture: 17 pixels = .31681 inches (TPS high rings 1.225" pictured)

Difference in height between TPS high and NF medium rings: 1.225" (TPS) - 1.00" (NF) = 0.225"

Amount of space between barrel and scope bell with NF medium rings installed: .31681" - 0.225" = 0.09181"

So.... with the same barrel, same scope, same base (NF 20 moa), but NF medium height rings... I should have .09181 inches clearance between scope and barrel... which is 1/12" or 2.3mm. Hopefully this works and I don't have to switch to high rings instead.

If you're not set on the NF rings I'd highly recommend the TPS rings. By all accounts the quality is as good as NF, but you can save some cash, and you know the mediums will fit. Rumour has it that TPS actually makes the NF rings!
