Ring height for mauser 98

How high would a set of rings have to be to clear that huge safety knob for a 40mm scope??

Three things that usually need to be done to a M98 prior to mounting a scpe.

1. Drill and tap the receiver
2. Reshape or replace the bolt handle
2. Replace the safety

If your Mauser still has the military trigger, consider taking the trigger and safety out and replacing with an aftermarket adjustable trigger with side safety. Solves the clearance problem with the flip type safety, allowing you to mount the scope closer to the receiver providing the bolt will clear the ocular bell.

Timney and Bold would be the easiest to get hold of. I know western Gun Parts here in Edmonton has them, and I'm sure someone out in BC must carry them as well. - dan

+2 on this. That's what I am having done to my Mauser at Al Hobbs in Richmond Hill.

I use low rings on side & model 70 style safeties, and medium rings with FN, Dayton Traister, and my version of forging the orginal to clear.

Use a maynard buehler safety, It locks the cocking piece rather than just blocking the trigger. Have it installed by a gunsmith
The other limit on how low the scope can be mounted is the bolt handle. Some bent bolts require very high mounts. Parker Hale bolt handle profiles allow the lowest scope mounts.
