So i've got a new Tikka T3 Varmint on the way, along with an EGW picatinny rail mount.
I'm about to purchase a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 to put on it, but the ring heights are being difficult to figure out! I'm thinking of putting Vortex Tactical 30 mm rings on.
Now EGW says the rail I bought is .4-.45" thick.
The rings put the center of the rifle scope tube at:
Low - 0.83" from the base
Medium - 0.97" from the base.
So if my objective lens is 44mm, then the distance that I need clearance for would be 22mm = 0.866" from the centre of the rings to the bottom of the base (receiver), right?
So then to me, using the low rings gives me 0.45"+0.85"-0.866" = 0.434" of clearance. This seems like a lot, even giving another 1/8" loss for scope cover, still a 1/3" clearance.
Would you buy the low rings and run with it? Or am I missing something?
Thanks for your input.
Also, is going from 44mm objective to 50mm objective worth the extra $50? This will be for maximum 600yd target shooting. Thanks!
