Goin' down the rabbit hole of a DMR M14.

2007 M305 22in
So far barrel indexed, upgraded spring guide rod, going to lop off the flash hider and cut/crown thread for a brake.
Shimmed gas cylinder...also have a Dlask adj gas block sight which will replace the current gas block after the cut/crown job.
Factory trigger ..I got lucky and have a decent one...a lil toothpaste job and she's acceptable...will keep me on my toes !

It looks like I'm getting aprox. .50mm case stretch measuring fired/deprimed commercial 308 ammo....that seems acceptable headspace??
I won't be pushing reloaded cases more than 4 times....and reloads will be tuned to run the action....nothing stiff.

I'm sticking with the Norc barreled action...drawing a line in the sand on $$ so will work with wherever this gets me.

I've just put the barreled action into an Archangel stock.
Was a lil' tedious and frustrating fitting...but she appears good to go now.
Besides trimming/relieving the right side action area I had to bring down the trigger pad area on the bottom of the stock a fair bit to get the trigger housing to close...still closes very firmly but seats properly.
No hammer follow or other probs, function check is good with proper trigger reset/safety function.

About to install a CASM M14 mount.
Plan on either a Bushnell Tactical 10x or Redfield Revolution optic...looking for a tough/reasonable quality/affordable scope in that power range that will hold up to a sound M14 thrashing!!
I've good experience with the Bushy Tac 10x on bolt guns...Have read similar things re the Redfield Revolution??
Any suggestions welcome??

What ring height and design are working well with the M14/CASM setup?
Steel or ally rings? (I bought the ally CASM version)
Height? The Archangel will mitigate any stock/cheek weld/fit issues of course....just want to get as low a boreline with the CASM as possible.
I was thinking Burris 3 screws or the Weaver equivalent?
I'm not going to war with this thing...in fact she'll be a range queen often...some field use but no battle conditions. Are steel/high $$ rings required or will a quality ally tactical ring as previously mentioned work well?
Again....talking about holding zero/staying tight and holding up to the M14 action abuse...not abusive field conditions.

Thanks in advance for any feedback...pepperin' this thread with pics of CASM/optic combos will be cool:cool::cool:

BTW

Not competing...well officially anyway.

Looking to bang steel and other targets 0~500M from the bench and improvised field shooting situations. Looking to develop some prone shooting skill and fun.
Minute of coffee cup ~ pie plate within those ranges is what I'm shootin' for...literally.

My experience has been that with a scope with a 30mm tube you will want low rings, leaves about 1/4 in with a 50mm bell. With a 1in tube you might be about to get it mounted with low rings if the bell is in the 40-44mm range. Best to go to the manufacturer's web site and see what and see what the rings measure out at. Hold your scope about the rail at that measurement and see where the bell sits. Not an exact science but it gets you in the ballpark. As already stated, your going to need a cheek riser anyways.

No cheek risers required...Archangel stock has that covered in spades with a excellent adjustable cheek riser system!!

The Bushnell 10x and Redfield are 1in tubes and 40mm obj so should be able to get by with low in either Burris Xtreme or Weaver tactical rings?
The Archangel is so adjustable I could use any height but I'd like to keep the scope as low as possible.

Redfield tactical or revolution with low alloy rings are perfect. Combine that with your archangel stocks cheek rest and your good. Use alloy rings with your alloy rail. Steel will put some narly marks on it because the steel is dencer.

Don't size your brass back to min 308 with that amount of stretch.
Only size enough to bump the shoulder, your brass won't last 4 firings if you stretch it from min to .019" everytime.

If you have other 308 rifles around it would be prudent to mark your brass to not feed your reloads in the wrong chamber.

I run CASM mounts, both steel and aluminum, but if you want the lowest bore/scope height, an ARMS 18 might serve you better. But with that adjustable cheek riser, scope height won't matter.
You'll have lots of room for your bell so use low mounts.

Either one of the scopes mentioned will work just fine in the '14.

Stay away from Vortex..... My PST Viper is off for warranty for the second time..... It only seems to last 30 rnds...

I would be very surprised if you get 4 firings out of any commercial brass with-out digging out separated cases from the chamber.

I am currently on a lot of 200 brass. All Federal blue box 150's. All fired out of several different Nork and M1A rifles. On the 3rd firing of this brass (with a nice mild accurate load) I am seeing 20% separated cases. Not a good place to be...... But all were re-sized down to minimum, at each firing.....
