Ring hieght for a Brno Rifle?

HI all!

I just got my Talley QD's in for my Brno 21H. They are too low as the bolt handle will not clear the power ring or the bell.:( Only one hieght is available from them.

So off I go to the Warne website, and they list a medium and high, at .425" and .535" respectively.

Before I go and waste more money on shipping the wrong rings, does anyone know what hieght I would need for a Leupold vx III to clear?

My standard CZ rings just clear but I am not sure exactly how high they are.

Thanks,
Noel

The Warne mediums would not clear my 21H either (with the butterknife bolt handle), but they do work on a model 21 with a conventional bolt handle (and a Leupold 2-7 Vari-X II).

So, your best bet is probably the high set. (The diameter of the eyepiece should be very close to the same as the 2-7)

Thanks guys.

I am going to check my CZ rings and see if I can get something similar. I didn't have any trouble with fast sight aquisition. Mind you, I am just so used to it being that way. It hadn't occured to me they were high until Davey commented on it the other day when he tried it out.

When I get my ZG back from ABTR I will see how these Talley's fit it and then maybe just use them on that rifle. The DDR sits much lower on it.

That is unless someone else needs a set of Talleys. LOL

Hi Dogleg!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 550's have a much different bolt contour and clear a scope much better than the 21H version does. Appreciate the input!

Even my ZG47 has about .300" lower mounts too.

I seem to have misplaced my keys to the safe so until they show up I have no way of relaying anymore info than already posted. Perhaps I left them with my brain..... :bangHead:

Hi Noel,
Here is a thread from the Accurate Reloading forums discussing the same thing.

http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3221043/m/608107354?r=608107354#608107354

Hope this helps.:)

Well, I broke out the hacksaw and got my safe opened.

My factory CZ rings are .700" high much more than I thought.
They clear a VX III with the butler creek flip ups perfect. I don't find them overly high but I didn't expect them to be this high. They also provide perfect clearance for the forward bell and flip up to clear the leaf sight.

The Talley's are only .415" . I wish I had looked into that a bit closer before ordering!
Nechako's link above gives some options for other rings that fit any budget.
Shows a good picture of the Warne super high mount on the thread for those considering them.

I am not sure what to do still. Warne mentions their high rings are .535" which will not work for my rifles, the 21H's anyway. I think I will be getting a set of Warne QD's for my ZG because the levers are on the bolt stop side of the reciever, out of my fumbling finger's way. The Talleys are on the bolt handle side and will not reverse.

Does anyone have info on the Tom Burgess gunsmith in Montana? Rumors fly that he makes nice Brno rings but I cannot find any info to back it up.

Thanks,
Noel

Lynx , their steel, and come high , also 11mm

Does the 21H use the same rings as the 600 series? If so contact lefty338-06 on this site. He has some surplus P-H rings that are just the right height and work perfectly. They do NOT lock into the cut-out on the 600 receiver, but I'm using them and have had no trouble at all over a 5 year period.
With a set of two, one should have a pin in the centre between the dovetail. Drive it out, grind it off, or drill a hole in the receiver:evil: NOT.

The DDR scope that is from my ZG47 seems to fit the 21H and it is stamped ZKK600 so I would dare say they will work.

Thanks rodagra, I cannot wait to get out my 3/8" drill and run a muck on my near mint 8x57! LOL;)

Are the P-H rings QD's?

"Are the P-H rings QD's?"
Not exactly, they're Weaver style with slotted finger-nuts. I used a doubloony in the slot to snug 'em down. I overdid it once for no good reason and broke the cross-bolt, but lefty came through with a spare in no time flat.
I guess a guy could put a tiny dab of JB weld under one or both rings but so far I haven't had to do that. If one did it would be easy to get them off with a bit of heat...and cheap insurance on a hard kicking hunting rifle.
There's a set of Millet mediums gathering dust somewhere around here, but they're a tiny hair too low for the ocular lense on any 3-9 that I have. The Millets are windage adjustable, which is nice if you need it...but you won't on the Brno dovetail. A guy could bend the bolt handle a tad or shave the top of the knob a bit, but why screw up a nice rifle?

I will likely keep my CZ rings for the time being on the 21H's and then use these QD rings for the 9,3x62 which has potential to try and make things slide around if they don't have the lug on the ring.
I dare not bend the bolt. It is in nice shape aside from an added butt pad and a rare rifle to start with. I think I will be ordering up a set Warnes and be done with it.

The Talley's appear to be sold already so I will have just enough to get WGP to order me a set that will fit the bill.

Thanks for the ideas!

Noel Burgess died some 10 to12 years ago. Ihave a set of his ring on my 21H. They are the best( and probably most expensive) They can be taken off and re-installed without any change in point of impact. I might be able to find another set but ,as I stated dam expensive. contact at jduncan64@shaw.ca

That is where I came across his name too Mauser98.
I cannot say either way but it sounds like he made some real
nice furniture. I hope for our sake he is indeed alive!

Actually, I got curious about this so I did some checking in an on-line phone directory and came up with a phone # for a Thomas Burgess in Kalispell. It's 406-755-4110. This is the same # that was posted on AR.
