I have an axis XP in 270 Win. I am getting a 1-piece rail for it, and I want to change the rings out while I am at it. Rail will either be weaver rail (probably from Cabelas) or a Magwedge rail from CanadaAmmo. Anyone have experience with both, and have an opinion on which is better? Anyone know if these are the same height off the receiver?

Currently, it has whatever scope came on the rifle (bushnell banner I think?) and I plan to upgrade that to a Vortex Diamondback once I am done paying for school, but I've been saying that for months now, and tuition isn't cheap...

The current rings are too high. I want to get something lower. My problem is I have no idea what to get. Whats good, whats not, ect ect ect

Keeping in mind that I dont wanna break the bank, and this is a $300 rifle, what would you suggest for rings? Weaver Grandslam? Burris standard Rings? Burris Zee rings? Something else?

Thanks for your help.

Most good scope companies have ring and base finders on their web site's.
Put in your gun and scope and it will tell you what base and rings you can use.
Get the lowest rings that will fit.
I just mounted a Leupold scope on my new Savage 22-250 and used Leupolds base and ring finder and it worked out perfectly for me.
I'm sure Vortex will have a similar function on their web site.

Suther, you should get Leupold one piece base for your rifle or something similar.
Here are two choices for you to consider from Leupold .
leupold.com/hunting-shooting/mounting-systems/dual-dovetail-mounting-systems/ or the leupold.com/hunting-shooting/mounting-systems/std-mounting-systems/

I clipped and pasted from the Leupold Web site, so you will need to add the www address.
These are two common mounting choices from Leupold.
BTW, you will want t use the lowest rings available with consideration for scope clearance front and rear.
Burris makes a similar product as well...
Just my .05 worth of advice this morning fwiw.

I have an EGW 20 MOA rail for the savage axis. I bought an axis last fall and couldn't get it to shoot. I mounted a 6.5-20 Vortex Viper on it but the thing wouldn't group with handloads even. It must have been the only axis that didn't shoot MOA. Lol. I bought the rail from the factory in the states. About $50 bucks USA. With shipping about $80. I think they are carried somewhere in Canada. Really nice rail though and it does add some height so plenty room for scope.... I didn't all the rail with the gun as it cost me almost a third of the gun price. Lol. If you want I could part with it...

Thanks, but I dont want a rail with any slant to it. Just a normal ol' rail is fine. I am leaning towards the one that Canada Ammo sells, because its made by MagWedge. That way, I am supporting two Canadian companies. My only issue is the damn shipping costs. $25 for a $27 rail is pretty steep, especially because they are on the other side of town from me. Hopefully, I should have a way to get one without getting it shipped after November 2nd though... The alternative is a weaver from Cabelas, which is cheaper, but I'd rather support Canadian companies if it wont cost me significantly more.

I believe either Mystic Precision or Hirsch Tactical sell the EGW rails, (maybe both?) but the price is a bit high for a budget build on an Axis.
