Ring removal.

Hello GunNutz!

I'm wanting to remove the rings off of this scope so I can put different ones on so I can mount it on a different type rail. Is that possible to do without destroying the rings? The only way I can see to do it is to pry open the clamp but that seems barbaric.

Some very old Weaver rimfire scopes had you remove screws from turret - front ring slid off, then remove turrets, then slide the rear ring forward - then re-install the turret boss. I do not think they had a front bell though. Is it possible that those rings might have two parts to each - a clamp part that mounts to the rifle, then the "top" part of the ring slides forward off that? Some weaver type rings have only one tightening screw to hold the scope - the other end of that ring is in like a notch or a clip that would hold it, but could not tighten it. FYI - As shown in your picture, that scope is upside down in those rings - horizontal (windage) adjustment knob should be to right side - elevation knob should be on top. Assume that the rings did not grow there - someone put them on - maybe you can figure out how to undo that.

There are also some rings that the "clamp" screw that fastens that ring to the rifle is also holding the ring left and right half together - it might need both screws removed completely to separate those rings from that scope. You are correct - "prying" those clamps to get them off seems to be a barbaric way of doing it - certainly not likely re-usable after trying that.

Remove all the screws. If they are one piece rings they were never intended to be removed. I suspect it would be a complete loss of value as a collectable at that point. Can't really tell from one picture...
 
The rings are loose on the scope so windage/elevation are irrelevant at this point. I cannot see any other way of removing them from the scope. The clamp to rifle screw is unrelated to the squeeze the scope screw, but the entire contraption is one piece.

Before you do anything more. please measure the tube diameter. those rings are permanent... If I'm wrong someone here will tar and feather me and give you better advice... but why waste the effort.. It was meant for a specific rifle most likely and may have very little value on anything else.
 
Yes - if the scope tube body is like 13/16" diameter - you are not likely to find other rings that size - even 3/4" and 7/8" diameter rings would be hard enough to find today. You might have to get some rings made? if you do not like those? Thinking about it - as if the factory assembly process slid those rings on, before the turrets or before the magnification cowl or eyepiece went on. You would have to undo and remove those to get the rings off - so much for "seals", etc. but if they did that, the scope is probably not purged.
 
The story is that just today picked up both of these at a yard sale. I like the TV view of the Tasco, but the Bushnell has the rungs that will fit my Remington 572. It sounds like at this point if I want to mount either of these it will have to be the Bushnell.

weaver to dovetail adapters are cheap, break the ruler out and take some measurements.

That's kinda the conclusion I'm coming to. I also picked up a Bushnell Buckhorn 3-9×40 that I will put on the 572. Just gotta think of it as a 3 for 1 deal. Anyone wanna buy a couple 2-7×20 cheap??

My suggestion is to try to research what they came off of. They would have some value to someone who wants OEM stuff.. trying to make an old rifle look good again... maybe...
But for what it's worth... buying a very old used scope has a whole bunch of not likely to be good value.... it's real value will be in matching it with the equipment it was meant for.. still probably not much.. but it's your time and effort to establish that value.... Cheers

whats the gap on those rings now? maybe they are a dovetail fit and not weaver-type?
