Rings/Bases Why Some Cost $100+ and others sub $60

Hey all,

So I just picked up a Nikon Monarch 5 2-10x422 to throw on a Savage 16/116 and I have been trying to figure out what rings and bases to get.
I am brand new to the whole optic game (normally just open sights or a red dot) and I am curious if I can get the experts advice on rings/base selections.

I am finding that bases range from $30-$150 and rings can even cost more.
What makes one better than the other?
Do you always have to "lap" factor rings?
Any suggestions for my above rifle/scope combo?

I'm a fan of steel rings. Leupold, Weaver Grand Slam & most recently, very nice ATRS 7075 aluminum 30mm rings.

The more $$$, the nicer they are...

I really like the Burris Sig Zee rings with the plastic inserts as well. They work great and are easy on the scope tube. They do cost a few bucks more especially the 30mm rings but I think they are worth it.
I am thinking about trying a set of the Talley lightweights for one of my new rifles. The Talleys seem to have a good following by people putting together lightweight hunting rigs.
 
I tend to stick with Weaver Tacticals or Burris Tacticals. Both have 6 machine screws per ring (3 per side). The Burris are a little beefier, but they are both good solid rings.
 
You can expect high dollar rings to fit and align better. Yes they are typically better made with tighter tolerances. There are times when cheap rings will not damage your scope and hold it tight and times they won't. Better rings give you less chance of failure. You can waste a lot of dollars in ammo before you figure out your scope is moving ever so slightly in bad rings. It all costs so pick your poison

I have experience with both. I really like the Talley rings, lightweight, low profile and they hold solid. I've used them on a Winchester M70 Super Grade and a Mauser M12. For the Burris Signature Zee rings, I have them on a Model 70 Sporter, solid and as mentioned they are very easy on scope tubes. Generally with a decent set of rings such as the Talleys there is no need to lap them (assuming the receiver is tapped properly). The only rings I ever bother lapping are the turn in style, and that is after aligning them.
 
just got a 10tr rifle and topped it i a Nikon BUCKMASTERS II 4x12 i got on a sale at sportsman show. not top end scope but for now good enough. I had a set of medium 1" millet aluninum scope rings (link below) so used these as they seamed very solid. They only cost a bit over 20$. now should i be rushing out to get better rings as they do seam very solid.

Another credit to the Burris Signature rings is that they also produce an insert kit that permits choice beyond just 0moa which is often necessary for long distance shooting. I use these for 200yard silhouette shooting with 22LR: 0moa rings and the Bushnell 4200 didn't have enough elevation adjustment.
 
Yes, pick your poison and stick with them. Spare parts/ more screws to choose from if you are in a pinch before a: hunt, match, practice, competition, clinic

To that end I have these brands I've stuck with over the years for my optics:

ARMS 22 (PR & hunting rigs, and .22LR trainers)
Burris Zee Rings (thanks to Mystic Player who showed me the light)
Millett Angle-Loc (won a few gold medals with them and killed hundreds of groundhogs)







Buy/select/hoard what works for you and your :

* Game
* cool factor, looks cool value
* budget
* EGO
* Self Esteem
* training schedule (you do train , don't you?) :eek:
* availability/source/LGS / Amazon / ebay/ airsoft supply at paintball field (I'm being facetious.... ) :evil:
* Posse (use what they are successful with) :cool:
