I bought some cheap (30$) rings for my m14s.
They shoot loose very quickly.

Do I have to really torque them down or buy better rings?

torqueing them down costs you NOTHING- mine are so tight you have to use a screwdriver ( which you should anyway) to get the first couple of turns- if you think about it, it's a rod centering in a v, with a clamp on the end, so the only play might be between the rod and the v not meshing properly- 30 buck rings are middle of the road, not cheap- the weaver steel goes for 29.95 retail- 12.95 is cheap and aluminum-

PM Oldsmobiler for the exact spec's on the whole scope thing. He did it to mine at the febuary clink that 45ACPKING put on and it's never coming loose. Plus he shoot's service rifle alot so he should be able to tell you what to get and how to put it on so it stay's on for the long haul.

Hey I heard my handle :D

For rings I'm super picky when it comes to torque specs since our rifles like to shake things up a lot and over torquing a ring cap can distort the tube or strip screws.

For tactical style rings I torque the large nut to 65 in/lbs and then the ring caps from 15 to 20 in/lbs. I have NEVER had a scope go loose on my stuff ever. Now this requires a proper torque wrench to prevent stripping out the little machine screws that the caps have.

What rings do you have? If you don't plan on taking the scope on or off at all I suggest you take it to a smith for them to do it up right. I'd hate to see a post where you did some damage

I think they are the 30$ steel weavers from Epps.

I don't have a torque wrench, but I'll give it a bit more elbow grease and see if that helps.

this works well ,there torque to 25 in/lbs
there steel weaver grand slam rings (best rings for the buck.. $under 25.00 each set)
