Soooo..I think I've figured this out myself, but looking for conformation. I just bought a used #1, .223, heavy barrel. The rings are different heights and the scope does not sit level. From my search and PM's from people it seems that most Rugers have rings of differnet heights, but the ruger web sites seems to say that heavy barrel models with the "target blocks" have rings of the same height...as the "blocks" are different heights. I bought the gun at a shop, it had a scope that was not included...the shop owner could not undo the ring screws, so he quickly swapped the rings for another pair. I think now that he put on a set of standard ruger rings, meant for a M77 or something. sounds to me like to only ruger with "special " rings is the varmint barrel version. And my "rings" are still on that scope in the shop. Does this sound right to anyone? Thanks, Pitched

not sure about the #1 Varmint but I know that rings for a Model 77 centerfire are different heights to make up for the rear bridge being lower than the front receiver ring(like most bolt actions)....

ie:the rear ring is higher from bore to base but they sit at the same level on the receiver.

#1's, M77 rimfires, M77 44 Mags, 22 Hornets and 7.62x39's use rings that are the same height from bore to base....and I think the 10-22 Magnum uses these rings also.

Yes, I think your right, I must have a set for a M77...nutts. Well I didn't know the difference and I guess the shop owner didn't either. I'll see if he'll mail them to me. Thanks for the info

I can't answer your question, but why not call Ruger directly and ask them? Their # is (603) 865-2442. I recently had to replace the hammer link in a Redhawk revolver and found their customer service reps to be quite helpful.
