Spotted a Madsen M50 in the hands of a Rio policeman online in the Sun today. Original design goes back to the Madsen M1902. Excluding the 1911 and No 1 Mk III, I'm hard pressed to find another such curio and relic still in the hands of a Police or military force. The Police M50s are in 7.62 NATO.

He's firing from that position? :S

When exactly was the term "ergonomics" brought into mainstream use? Clearly that word had'nt been thought of when this firearm was developed. Or maybe the akwardness only reared its ugly head when trying to use such a classic old weapon in a modern fashion.
My.01 cents.:)

If any of you have seen "City of God", you know there is quite a collection of milsurps floating around in the movie. Everything from SAFN's to MP40's to Madsen SMG's to Colt M1917's.

I imagine importers were bringing in as much as they could during the postwar years, and there is quite the international collection of arms floating around as a result.

Maybe the guy is a milsurp enthusiast, and took the opportunity of using the oldest gun in the station arsenal. Even the sling looks ancient. Seriously, that is one tall receiver.

Also, note the ejected casing, distorted because of its speed and rotation when the picture was taken.

Cool pic.

Notice he his hiding behing a wall and straightened out his left hand to reduce his profile. I would fire from that position too in that situation, not much of his body is exposed to the perp, just the gun, his fingertips and 1/5 of his head, may have removed his helmut to reduce profile. wouldn't do much good facing straight on anyhow. This is now real world fighting, no time for semantics in these places

If you watch the extras about the police patrolling the Favelas you can see what some are carrying. Spotted an HK 21 among other rather modern guns. The slum residents are armed with everything from rocket launchers to zip guns.

You'll see all kinds of stuff in South America. With few exceptions, the governments there don't have the money for much new kit. Fair bit of 'home grown' kit though.

Wow, just when you think that the Russia/china/Britain/USA has armed the world with modern firearms, an oldie pops up....

Thanks to IANSA Rio has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world.

So how is it possible that there is gun violence? Did they not make that illegal?

Oh yes, I forgot. Only law abiding people handed in their guns giving free reign to the criminals.

I found that movie pretty intense to watch.

It's a tough place, and a very good example how gun laws, strong regulations and bans will not fix a situation that is based on social economics.

I wasn't really refering to the shooters body position, more to the fact that he's firing a GPMG from his bicep. The comments about reduced profile do make a lot of sense though.

What's even odder is the fact that this gun was available in WW1 but I don't think any major combatant employed it in large numbers. Light, portable and by all reports reliable and accurate.
