RL 22 and heavy bullets in 6.5x55

Pbonura Keep in mind some of the loads listed in this thread are for 'modern' actions.

I can't really help as when I started loading I got a ridiculous box of powder from ammo mart, reserved it for the swedes and only recently ran out so do not have much experience to draw on.

No matter what you choose if you keep the velocity down to a safe level, load consistently and shoot well that 96 and 160 grain bullets will make the uber magnum crowd cry with envy when you leave your target out for them to accidently see LOL.

they are really a lot of fun, my 85 and 140gr. loads have the same POI at 100 yards (the 85gr. is loaded more conservatively) I currently use 48gr. of RL-22 behind a 140gr. partition...I went up to 48.5 but groups didint' tighten any so I opted a little less since the change in velocity is negligible.

In my Mauser M98 with a 28" barrel, I go to about 55K psi. With the Hornady 140gr AMAX at an OAL of 3.200" (0.035" off the lands) I get:

Re17 - 44.0 grs - 2725 fps
H4350 - 46.0 grs - 2780 fps
Re19 - 46.0 grs - 2490 fps (a surprise - needs more testing. Re19 seems almost interchangeable with Re22, but this is still slower than expected)
H4831 - 48.0 grs - 2750 fps
Re22 - 49.0 grs - 2850 fps

These loads are all full cases:

IMR7828 - 51.0 grs - 2940 fps
H1000 - 53.5 - 2820 fps
Re25 - 54.0 grs - 2940 fps
Retumbo - 53.0 grs - 2650 fps
US869 - 59.0 grs - 2740 fps

Just curious, what kind of case and primer ?

Andy, leave it to you to have a 6.5 with a barrel long enough to live up to the cartridge's potential. There is certainly a niche out there for a non bolt Single shot hunting rifle in 6.5x55 with a 28-29 inch tube. hmmmm I think I feel another project coming on.

Tried 2 different loads this morning:

1) 140gr Hornday SP ontop of 46gr RE22 in a Win case and CCI 200 at 76.5mm OAL averaged 2512 fps and gave excellent accuracy with groups around 0.6" at 100m. This is mild but a great practice load.

2) 129 gr Hornady SP ontop of 47gr RE22 with same case , primer and OAL averaged 2574fps, The accuracy was wierd. It was stacking 2 close to each other (within an inch) and the third would fly, anywhere from 1-2" out! Could it be barrel temp?

I still have some V N560 on hand to try with the 129's but might try IMR4350 at some point with the 129's, it might like a slightly faster powder?

Great thread guys....

I use 42gr of either IMR 4350 or N204 with a 156-160gr RN on top.Never recovered a bullet yet from moose................Harold

Kayaker I really like N560 with 129gr hornady interlock and Interbond. Higher velocity and a little more accurate than H4350. My load is C.O.L of 3.10 and Lapua brass Br-2 primer 48gr of N560 and the 129gr Hornady Interbond. My rifle is a Tikka T3.

When I go for a moose or black bear I use factory Norma Oryx 156gr. Bang flop...

spent some time at the range with 130 accubonds and the 156 Alaskans. Went with a 46 grain load under the 156s. Could'nt be happier with the rifle sighted for the 130s to hit 3 high at 100 and 2 high at 200 it shoots to point of aim at 200 with the 156s.

Accuracy was outstanding with both loads if any one out there is contemplating a tikka purchase do not delay another second, just buy one.

Thanks again to all for the help.

Thanks for that. Do you load 3.1" with the 129 gr SP interlock as well? I was just looking at a nosler manual today and theyshow 44-48gr of N560 with a 130gr. I'll be testing that next week!

Do you load 3.1"

kayaker load em to fit your rifle. I like em just barely touching the lands, some like em just off the lands. Either way your rifle determines the cartridge over all length. No sense reducing case capacity anymore then you need to or making a bullet leap too far to reach the guidance system.

Where are you buying the Alaskans ? what kind of price point on those ?

In a fresh 23.5" barreled M96 Swede, I've settled on a winter load of 48 gr. R22, 140gr., Lapua brass, Fed 215M, .010" off.
Summers heat needs 1/2 grain less powder and a switch to BR2's, or pressure gets high and it falls out of node.
The load clocks 2675 fps, somewhat slow due to the .2655" oversize bore.
Accuracy with some (Scenar, Amax) Match 140's is outstanding ... sub 1/2MOA consistently.
Every 139/140/142 gr. bullet I've tried wants to cluster tight with R22.
