I am trying to interpret the match schedule and trying to see where I fit in. I am shooting a 223 savage 12 FVSS. Which matches can I participate in with this. What is minimum equipment required to participate.?

Finally I have a leupold VX II 4-12 with an Adjustable objective. Is this usable with this style of shooting. If I do use it do I need target turrets, and if I do need turrets can I just get away with elevation they cost 119 each.

Jason, Daniel Chisholm RNBRA-SHooter is the chap to hook up with. He is a good guy, a real ambassador and he will help sort out the cryptic schedules that all our PRA's like to post. I have been #####ing about the fact that even experienced shooters can barely tell what matches apply to what disciplines. If he doens't help you out, drop me a line and I will make SURE someone from the RNBRA gets in touch with you.

I hope that the people that post these schedules have listened to Jason's comments.... see what I mean??? :)

Hi Jason,

I would strongly suggest you try to make the All Comers Match on June 26th. It's geared toward introducing new shooters, and the ranges are good to start with, since we start at 300m, and then work our way back to 500 and 600.
The Match on May 8th (Loyalist, Saint John, Westmorland) is also a very good one to start with. Since it's all at 300 meter, it's a great place to start.
Your .223 Savage is just fine for anything on the Fullbore section schedule, except Service rifle. Target knobs are huge help, but not stricly madatory. Is sending the scope off to be retrofitted, than I would say go all the way and add both windage and elevation. I do have an aftermarket Stoneypoint knob that can be fitted to your scope on the day of the match if you want to try before buying, as it were.

Do you load your own ammo, or are you shooting factory ammo?

Where in NB are you?

The moderators might want to move this thread to "Long Range/Precision Shooting Competitions", but these are great questions Jason asks.

The cryptic list of RNBRA matches does need a secret decoder ring, I agree. I'm going to paste in here parts of a couple of emails I've had with Jason, perhaps others might also be interested.

(Jason is in northern NB, a bit more than a four hour drive from CFB Gagetown).

Hi Jason,

Unfortunately I don't know of any shooting near you. Most of our shooting is at CFB Gagetown, which would be a (more than) four hour drive for you. We have one even (15-16 Circle Training, which would probably be very worthwhile and fun for you) in St., Antoine, which is about three hours for you

All our shooting is done from the prone position. Have you ever been on a fullbore or military range before, do you know the general idea or should I describe it for you?

Our regular fullbore matches offer "TR" (iron sighted target rifle, .223 or .308, using a shooting jacket and sling), and "MTR" (which is .223 or .308, a Harris or equivalent light bipod is permitted, any sights/scope, no rear rest may be used but your hand may be on the ground and support the butt), as well as F-Class proper (like MTR except that you are allowed any means of rear support, which in practice means people use a sand bag of sorts).

In addition to our regular fullbore matches, we have some military rifle matches (15 May, 7 Aug, 28 Aug), which is meant for M14, M1 Garand AR15 etc, Precision matches (sniper-style, with scoped .223 or .308), plus one smallbore (.22 rimfire) match in Woodstock, and a few team matches (which are usually teams consisting of a combination of TR and F-Class shooters), and a few out of province matches too.

You could shoot in "MTR" or F-Class, and as you can see you could probably find something to shoot most weekends.

Your scope should be fine. Does it have a knob that you can turn with your fingers and has numbers written on the dial, or is it the kind that you turn with a coin and has un-numbered has marks? You need to be able to record your sight settings for a particular range, so that you can later return your scope to that setting the next time you shoot at that distance. The distances we shoot are 300m, 500m, 600m, 800m and 900m.

Do you shoot factory ammo from your rifle or do you handload, and if so, what bullets have you successfully used? You generally want to use the heavier target bullets (75 or 80 grains); lighter bullets will also work, but they get blown around a lot more by the wind.

As you can see, MTR and F-Class would be a natural fit for you and your rifle.

As Matt said, the All-Comers Match ought to be one of your first choices. The "Circle Training" is not a match, but is a coach-and-be-coached learning opportunity of the first order.
