Roasted Gopher or Marmot??

Mr Friendly, thanks for your offerings. I said public property and I thought that meant the same as crown property. I thought crown property meant we all owned it, together, ie, public property. However, we know what I mean, so we won't argue about word meaning.
You mention the hoary marmot. I think they are one of the nicest animals in the mountains. It's unreal the way they warn others of danger. I have been on remote mountains in north eastern BC that were just crawling with them. Pop over a hill and a shill shriek would be heard close by. Then another one that couldn't see me, would pass on the warning. On a quiet day I have heard the warnings, getting ever weaker to my ears, as hoary marmots (whistlers) kept repeating the warning, of my presence, to their pals.
Sadly, I think whistlers are greatly decreasing in numbers. I hope I am wrong and maybe some of you people who have had recent trips in wilderness mountains could respond.

you're right H4831...when I read your post, I read it as 'private property' rather then how you put it. public or crown, you're not allowed to shoot them as they're a Schedule C animal...on private you can with owner's consent, should they deem them a nuisance.

it's been a while since I was high enough to be hiking around where hoaries would be, but they are cool to watch and hear. I love watching wildlife period...chipmunks and squirrel's are a hoot! :D

Some years ago, I was out shooting gophers and my big old dog was eating them. He would sit behind me while I shot two or three, then, at my command, he would run out and bring one back, sit down and eat the damn thing. Nice - right after supper too. I looked back one time and the gopher he was eating was full of worms!!!!Gaaackkk!! Needless to say, poor old Rubin (the dog) got a good dosing of worm pills for the next while. Moral of this story - you guessed it - no gophers for this lad. :puke:

When I was guiding in the NWT the First Nations people from the Yukon would come up the North Canal Road onto the NWT. While the men were out hunting the woman and kids would be snaring ground squirrels and roasting them over a fire. Must have been tasty the way they were going at it!

There is no way in he11 I would eat a gopher. I have serious problems with the fact they eat each other when the dead one is still twitching. Plus, who knows what crap they've been eating. Maybe they got into the pesticides.

Uggh... makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.

There was one place where I saw hundreds of marmots in the mtns of Region 3 one time and went back another time and they were all gone.

It is crown land and it´s illegal to shoot them there.

I wish people would just leave them alone there.
