Anybody sign up for any courses yet? Im thinking about doing the introductory one for civilians. Not sure if the courses he is offereing to millitary and law enforcement are open to civilians or not.

This may come as a surprise to you - and others - but "law enforcement" ARE civilians.

Whether they know it or not - or like it or not - they ARE still civilians.

Yeah, I know, I could be charged for writing that. I know.

And good luck to Mr Rob Furlong with his Markmanship Academy. Nothing against him - exactly the opposite.

Whether you know it or not - or like it or not - they ARE NOT regular civilians. It's a respect they have gained by action not words.

Cops are not members of our nations armed forces so they go into the civilian box.
They may have extra duties and permissions but they are still civilians.

Just get out and learn as much as you can, take courses, cross-pollinate and keep your skills current. All good training. Hey, even all you students out there keep me learning. It's all a good journey! :D

Cheers,
Barney

Rob is starting a school, I talked to him both in Las Vegas about it and at the Calgary gun show, it's mostly geared towards military and law enforcement, that being said he does have a class scheduled late this summer for civilians and I believe it will be at the rocky rod and gun, he did make mention of a potential range he might be opening just south of Calgary for his academy. He will be shooting hornady ammo and leupold optics primarily and he is a pretty big supporter of Horus reticles so I expect them to grow (ffp joke) in popularity up here after his students come through the course

I would never consider going to a tactical anything course but if its close to me and high quality instruction I might be checking this thing out.

Interesting.
I've known that R. Furlong was the guy to make that long shot for the record, but didn't know he got into media trouble.
The price of fame.
On the flip side, corporations are sponsoring him and his academy so the incident can't be troubling them .

I've always thought of cops as 'Civil Servants'. They are more bogged down into paperwork, minute by minute details, get paid by the hour with overtime, unionized and go home every day. Military life doesn't resemble this.

Funny how some seem to think a career in the Military (esp Infantry) is just like any other job. At least that's the way some come across.

:D Perhaps we should start a school, call it reality check.

hero or zero?

I watched the video a few times of the recount of that shot and was less then impressed with the results and the fame that came afterwards, first two shots missed the target and the third was a hit........I always thought a true sniper was a one shot one kill kind of hero, third shot in my books tends to lean heavy on a fluke type situation

Actually, that's quite common in extreme long range sniping.
Carlos Hathcock would also walk shots in the 2,500yds ranges with his scoped Ma Deuce .50 BMG.
I dare say even one shot, one kill 1,000yds hits are difficult enough considering environment and other variables.

You obviously haven't spent much time beyond 1000, possibly none on man sized targets (that was in no way meant to be condescending)

Here's a question. What are the prices like and does he plan on doing bookings for ranges out side his geographic area. I would pick up the rifle and glass just to take the course if he does.

I'm sure Rob Furlong will be crushed when he learns that his achievement couldn't fullfill your expectation of what defines a true sniper. Maybe you could offer him some pointers before he embarasses himself in front of his students at his shooting school.

Well said ! In my book he and all the other CF personnel who have served in Afghanistan deserve a pat on the back and our thanks. As for Rob Furlong's shot I consider it to be an outstanding feat of arms and for what it's worth when I introduced myself to Mr. Furlong at SHOT (where he was working at the Leupold booth) I found him to be a very genuine, even one could say humble sort of fellow.
