In a previous thread Ian said he would send anyone interested a stock to examine. As I had a couple of projects in mind I decided to take him up on his offer and asked to see a Model 70 stock of about 20 ounces finished in dark green with black marbeling.

The stock arrived today and I'll give you an overview of my impressions.

First this is a very well laid up stock and the colours as specified are contained in a thick gel coat. Scratches and abrasions should generally polish out if they aren't very deep.

The inletting was sharply done (no rounded edges in this job) and took very little actual fitting to drop the barreled action to depth.

It will take a light bedding job with Marine Tex to get it sealed on all the edges and perfectly supported but I wouldn't hesitate to test fire it as is if I was inclined.

The style of the stock is similar to that of a Remington Classic stock (no cheekpiece) and will suit me just fine. Has a bit of drop at heel but not excessive and the comb line gives good facial support in line with a scope. The forend is moderately full but not overly bulky.

Swivel studs are installed but I requested no recoil pad as I have a preference of pad that I prefer to use and have them on hand.

There is no checkering on the stock but I believe Ian is making new patterns that will include that nicety.

His stocks are not inexpensive and are probably priced comparably to other top of the line U.S. stocks when landed here. I don't think his stocks give up anything in construction to any of them. Solid stuff and worth our support.

Unfortunately I can't post pictures but perhaps when the whole job is done including a rebarrel job I ll find someone with the equipment to do it and let you all in on the stock.

I have never personally

seen or held any of Ian's stocks but I can tell you that I strongly believe it will be the stock of choice for my BR gun project when it begins. It must be a good product as he makes the stocks for 2 predominent US based gun builders. He makes stocks for Speedy Gonzales and just recently informed me he will be doing stocks for Borden. I think that must speek for itself. There may be people out there that may not like them but I think who he is supplying must say something about his product. Best of all they are made in Canada. :D :D

Robertson H&H Stock

I just got my Savage 10FLP back from Robertson Composites. They supplied and fit an H&H stock in olive green with rail, slider, adjustable cheek piece, spacer butt system and textured grip.

I haven't shot it yet but fit & finish are excellent, and service, communciation and turnaround were all excellent.

Since when did Robertson make a stock that was 20 oz finished?

All his stocks on his web page were heavy, I sent him a P.M regarding any lightweight stock he may be making and never recieved a reply so I ended up buying a Bansner.

Oh well

Brambles: That was my initial impression too. I think Ian's web site is a bit out of date and he is expanding his line. I haven't weighed the stock yet but I would guess it is close enough to the weight specified not to quibble. That weight was exclusive of pad and bedding compound by the way so I can expect a bit more weight time it's finished but it will still be a lot lighter than the original walnut stock it was intended to replace.

this is my LR rig its a Savage 110FP with a Robertson Tactical stock best stock I have ever used!!!

One of the Best!

Ian also makes stocks for Mark Pharr, the Nesika Hunter, Speedy's F-class stock and his benchrest stocks and a whole lot of other stocks. I have personally used three stocks made by Ian and have two more ordered. Ian's stocks reign supreme in metallic silhouette as most people are either shooting Mark Pharr's design or the Nesika design for Hunter class. Give Ian a call and give and I am sure you will be happy with the end product, if not Ian will make it right.

Hey Ian when I plug your stocks does that move my stocks closer to the top of the list? :D
