Robinson Arms XCR-L gas tube damaged on new to me rifle :(

Hi All,

I just picked up a used RA XCR-L last night, while fondling, stroking and admiring my newly acquired possession I noticed the gas tube has some damage around the little cut-out that indexes with the gas block. I checked the instructions, which say to install with the gas vents facing down to reduce recoil...When installed this way, the gas tube is not held firmly by the corresponding key on the gas block, allowing the tube to rattle and rotate a few degrees in one direction. When the tube is installed with the vents facing upwards, everything is nice and tight without any rattles.

I know Robinson arms has a great warranty, but would they be likely to replace something like this? Also, who would I call for a replacement tube? Robinson arms themselves or the Canadian importer?

EDIT: pics posted.

Thanks in advance.

The gas tubes all have play in them. They kinda rattle and rotate a bit normally. I'd try to get it back into shape myself first, but the good news is that a replacement tube should only be $15-20 as per http://xcr.robarm.com/L Assemblies.pdf

Call Wolverine, they'll get you sorted.

ps. that must've been improperly installed, I don't see any other way for such damage to occur

You could have re-shaped the tube, in the time it took to type your post.
Slide the tube over something similar in size, (wood dowel, round stock, socket or extension from your tool kit, etc) and tap the raised lip back to shape. Or call Wolverine for a new one.

My tube has some wiggle as well, no damage like yours but still moves a bit. I've also tried with the holes facing up, with no felt deference.

I highly doubt this is a manufacturing fault, more like a previous owner fault.

My guess is that the gas tube sits loosely when installed correctly to reduce the input onto the gas block / barrel. Just a guess though.

Thanks for the replies. Ill contact Mr Wolverine tomorrow. I peened it back into shape and took it to the range today. I wasn'texpecting great accuracy based on the reviews i have read. i put 100 rounds of norinco silver box x39 down range and a variety of 223. both barrels shoot an honest 2.5 m o a with the edge going to 7.62 x39. With the 223 being 1:7 I may see tighter groups with a heavy bullet, I only had 55gr on me. all in all i am happy with the purchase. i need to order a new bolt catch as well, i understand wear on that is common as well, everytime i set it down the bolt would slam shut.

After doing some more research this problem seems to be from improper assembly of the barrel into the receiver. The notches weren't lined up when the barrel was installed. By most accounts people just bang it back into shape... some guys swear by kinking the tube further in order to have it snug and eliminate movement. I wouldn't do that personally, YMMV.

I wouldn't bother ordering another tube. You'll have to disassemble everything and most likely re-zero the gun; easier to just beat your existing tube back into shape. FWIW my tube shows similar damage but not as harsh.

Yeah, I can see that it was obviously damaged during improper assembly. I called Wolverine today, they said the part was around $20. I will pick one up anyway, but I now know this one will function fine as is.

The bolt catch on this gun is also in very bad shape, it won't hold the bolt back reliably. I emailed Rob Arms today and sent them pics of the bolt catch, they told me the rifle carried a lifetime warranty and to contact Wolverine for a replacement. I contacted Wolverine this morning and was informed that I would have to purchase the part as I was not the original buyer. I guess they can do what they want being the only supplier of parts in Canada. Oh well.
