ROCHELLE the tuktu(caribou) slayer ...

Well i purchased my Springfield-Armory M1A .308 ROCHELLE to slay a nanuq(polar bear) ... however today she became a tuktu(caribou) slayer as I shot and killed 2 today ... 1st one was from about 150 yards and I had it lined up for the lower neck as it was turned sideways kinda looking at me ... just as I squeezed the trigger it turned away ... nailed it in the top left part of the neck and exited out the mouth ... 2nd one was real close about 60-75 yards and nailed it in the head ... sweeeeet!!! :D I haven't had much time off work to go hunt a nanuq(polar bear) and well since I had yesterday and today off for Christmas ... thought I'd take Silu my girlfriend outland as the tuktu(caribou) are real close! My best bud Vic22 also came and he got 3! We saw a ton of them out there but found us some fat ones to shoot ... oh the eating is gonna be good! ;) Sorry I forgot to take my digital camera as I was rushed this morning ... :(

p.s. I was saving ROCHELLE to slay a nanuq(polar bear) but she had to come out as my OLD BETSY(my 303 British) froze up on me ... damn girl ... ;)

Here is ROCHELLE my Springfield-Armory M1A(painted by SKULLBOY) ... oh yeah I also forgot to mention that my Blue Star .223 was used by my best-pal Vic22 and he got 3 tuktu(caribou) with it ... it was about -32 degree's celsius today with little wind ... he got to test her out in cold weather and used the trigger-guard like it's suppose to when folded up with BIG mitts ... very cool ... ;) Cheers my fellow CGNer's,

Good job Otokiak!

You have to post pics of Nanuq when you get a chance to hunt him..

Are you running ROCHELLE dry or are you using a special cold weather grease?
 
The only way an Enfield can freeze is when the bolt's innards are filled with oil or old grease.
Disassemble the bolt (you'll need a special firing pin retainer wrench), clean the thing with brake cleaner then lubricate everything with some Teflon lubricant or dry moly lubricant.

Hey O... White huh... Isn't there enough white stuff around you up there??? Heh heh heh... Must be hard to find her in the snow... Anyhow, it's to bad about the pics, it would have been nice for us southern'ers to see some 'boo on the snow... Congrats on the hunt!

Thanks for the words and replies ... shot them tuktu with 150 GR. Power-point Winchester ... the sheit the local stores only really supply ... usually it's only 180 GR. :( I may go up the road that leads outta town tomorrow for a quick tour and snap off some pics of the tuktu if I see any for you guys/gals ... our one road that trucks/cars can drive up goes about 12-14 Km's and I saw some there when I was going outland to shoot my tuktu! Cheers ... ;)

I've only killed a Black Bear with my Norc M-14. I got a Caribou with my AG42B though. 6.5x55mm at 150yrds kicked the crap out of it too:cool:
 
Otokiak... thanks alot for the info on the bullets. I had to use 150 gr. PowerPoints on white tail deer one year because I couldn't get 180's locally.. and they actually worked well!:)

You and your friend sound like awesome marksmen and hunters (I guess you would have to be due to where you live). :)

I'm going to try to get out and up the road tomorrow and see if I can get some pics of tuktu as they are really close to town ... hundreds of them ... anyway I put some new pics in the photo section of a nanuq(polar bear) skull and a tuktu(caribou) I was skinning up ... hopefully after tomorrow I'll have some pics of tuktu(caribou) walking about up the road ... cheers,

Otokiak, there are constant arguments on this board about hunting medium sized game with .223 ammunition yet your friend seems to have bagged 3 caribou with a pe90. Could you please tell us a little about the effectiveness of the smaller round (did the animals go down with a single shot)...
...oh, and thanks for posting all the great pics, it's great to hear from our northern brothers.

stephen492, hunting tuktu(caribou) with a .223 rifle is quite a bit different than hunting mid-size wildlife in the south I'M SURE as you folks have bush to deal with, animals that don't don't travel in large herds(I think anyway as most deer are alone???), etc ... tuktu(caribou) are a real dumb animal in my opinion and won't run too far from you ... so hunting them with a .223 and getting head/neck shots is the way up here ... as you can get so close to acheive those types of shots! The 3 tuktu(caribou) my best pal got with my PE90 were neck/head shots ... he did shoot 1 of them twice mind you ... ;) I know this arguement has been on the board off and on forever ... it is DIFFERENT up here as you can get real damn close! I'm sure there are a million others here who would disagree on the choice of calibre! Cheers,

p.s. you can learn ALOT from this board ... hell I used to hunt/shoot tuktu(caribou) with FMJ's til I read stuff here ... BIGREDD educated me a few times ... seriously! ;)
